L

REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN.

THE Selectmen of the town of Weymouth respectfully sub- mit their Report for the year ending December 31, 1872, with the schedule of receipts and expenditures annexed, as follows :

We are gratified to be able to report that the expenditure for the past year has not, in any department of the public service, exceeded the appropriation made therefor by the town at its annual March meeting, and that in our judgment, like amounts, with small additions for " Schools " and "Roads," and an appro- priation for the use of the Board of Health, which the preva- lence of the small-pox has rendered necessary, will be sufficient to cover all the ordinary expenses of an economical administra- tion of town affairs for the coming year.

The streets which have been built, or widened and straight- ened during the year, under the direction of the Selectmen, are the following, viz. : Commercial street, between King, Oak Hill and Cottage street at East Weymouth (in part) ; Madison street ; the new street leading from Shawmut street, near the house of Joseph A. Cushing, to the same street at a point near the house of John Fennell, for which we propose the name " Washburn street"; the portion of Pond street between the Railroad station and Main street, at the junction near Quincy Pool's, left incomplete from the previous year ; Randolph street from the ice-house to the intersection of the new street laid out by the County Commissioners as a more direct route to Hol- brook, and including that part of this new street which lies in Weymouth ; and a portion of the westerly section of West street.

.

4

The streets already accepted by the town, or laid out by the County Commissioners, which remain to be worked, are as fol- lows, viz. : the new street from North to Green streets ; the in- completed portion of Commercial street, between Middle and Cottage streets ; Pleasant street, from Water to Pine streets ; the uncompleted part of West street ; and Hunt street.

The acceptance by the Supreme Judicial Court, since our last Report, of the award of the commissioners appointed by the Governor and Council to determine anew in what manner the bridges over Weymouth Fore and Back rivers should be main- tained, has imposed upon Weymouth a liability for one-half of the expense of such maintenance, upon Hingham seven-twelfths, and upon Quincy five-twelfths of the remaining half.

The guide boards are generally in good condition throughout the town, and in substantial conformity to the requirements of law.

JAMES HUMPHREY, Z. L. BICKNELL, NOAH VINING, ABNER HOLBROOK, FRANCIS AMBLER,

Selectmen of Weymouth.
