1
REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN.
THE Selectmen of Weymouth respectfully submit their report for the year ending December 31, 1874, with the schedule of receipts and expenditures annexed as follows.
In the department of roads we have not expended the whole of the appropriation for the current year, but the balance remaining con- sists chiefly of the reserve for removing snow, and for maintaining the bridges over Fore and Beck Rivers, which items have been con- siderably less than they have usually been.
The streets worked or repaired during the year under our direction are as follows : Lovell Street completed ; the section of Neck Street between land of Elisha Pratt and Bridge Street; the section of Com- mercial Street between John D. Salisbury's and Station Street (in part) ; the section of Pleasant Street between Water Street and Mrs. Buttimore's (in part) ; the section of Broad Street between Middle and Essex Streets (widened and gravelled) ; the larger part of Webb Street ; a section of Commercial Street near the junction of Webb Street; the new street leading from Washington Street at a point near the house of H. N. Our to a point on Front Street near the shop of Jacob Loud, 2d, for which street we recommend the name of Con- gress Street ; the new street leading westerly from a point near the junction of Front Street and Summer Street to Braintree line, for which we recommend the name of Walnut Street; the new street leading westerly from a point on Front Street near the house of George W. White, Jr., to Braintree line, for which we recommend the name of Elliot Street ; an extension of the street known as White's Lane, for the whole of which street, commencing at a point on Union Street near the house of J. S. White, and extending westerly to the land of Boylston A. White, we recommend the name of White Street, and a section of Pleasant Street near the Pratt School-house.
The workings which remain for the next year are the following, viz. A short section at the southerly end of Neck Street, the completion
4
of the work on easterly section of Commercial Street, the middle sec- tion of Webb Street, Hunt Street, the completion of the section of Pleasant Street between Pleasant Street School-house and Mrs. But- timore's house, North Street between Commercial Street and Pearl Street. Randolph Street between the house of H. O. Carroll and Pond Street, and the new street laid out by the County Commissioners from Randolph Street to Pond Street. And in addition such of the town ways to be reported by us at the Annual March Meeting as the town shall require to be wrought.
In the Police Department a small balance remains unexpended, but we have employed such force as seemed to us to be necessary for the preservation of a reasonable degree of order in the more frequented streets, without attempting to establish a system of police supervis- ion which shall (except incidentally) afford protection to property from the depredations of thieves and burglars.
Although no appropriation was made for the payment of the town debt, yet by reason of the unexpended balances and the sum received from the State for corporation taxes, a considerable reduction has been effected.
No guide-boards have been erected during the year ; but those erected a few years since are generally in good condition, and are, we believe, sufficient to meet the requirements of the law.
JAMES HUMPHREY, Z L. BICKNELL. NOAH VINING, ABNER HOLBROOK, AUGUSTUS J. RICHARDS, Selectmen of Weymouth.
WEYMOUTH, January 1, 1875.
