REPORT OF THE Selectmen and Board of Public Welfare
The Board organized on February 12, 1934 as follows: F. Eben Brown, Chairman; Charles W. Knowlton, Clerk, Board of Selectmen. F. Eben Brown, Chairman; Claudia I. Schiller, Secre- tary, Board of Public Welfare and Old Age Assistance.
The major portion of the Board's time has been given to relief problems, which become increasingly difficult each year. Due to the various Emergency Relief appropriations from the Federal Government the cost of Public Welfare and Soldiers Re- lief was reduced by about $20,000 in 1934. We call the attention of the citizens to the increasing burden of Old Age Assistance, with expenditures amounting to $16,637.18 in 1934, as compared with $7,232.06 in 1932.
In accordance with regulations of the State a visitor from the Department of Public Welfare assisted the town visitor in the investigation of relief cases during part of the year. Listed below is an account of the visits by the town investigator.

We call your attention to the report of the Emergency Re- lief Administration, under the direction of F. Eben Brown, which gives an account of the various projects undertaken during the past year.
We take this opportunity of expressing our appreciation of the cooperation of the various departments.
Respectfully submitted,
F. EBEN BROWN, CHARLES W. KNOWLTON, THOMAS W. WHITFIELD.
Report of the Infirmary
Fifteen persons have been cared for at the Infirmary during the past year. At present there are eight, including one who is out on leave of absence. The largest number at one time has been nine.
We have had a hard year in the care of the sick, having taken care of two pregnant girls, one patient from Attleboro Sanitarium who came to us to regain her strength preparatory to going to her own home; one hospital patient who recuperated sufficiently to go out to work. There have been five deaths; three from can- cer, one from old age, one from cerebral hemorrhage. All of the above cases required special diets, as well as medical care. One patient was removed to Tewksbury. I wish to speak of the loyal- ty of the employees, who have stood by through these hard un- pleasant cases.
At present we have one man over ninety years of age, who has the Boston Post cane, one man and one woman between eighty and ninety years old, two men between seventy and eighty, one woman under twenty and a baby three months old. Two of these people assist with the work around barn and house.
The Public Welfare Department used part of our land for a garden, as last year, raising a good crop in spite of the dry weather.
At Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey dinners were served. Santa Claus left each one a basket filled with good things, swea- ters, slippers and other clothing in addition to fruit and candy. We wish to thank The King's Daughters, the Ladies Aid of the Centre M. E. Church, those merchants who contributed gifts and the members of the Board of Selectmen. The house was deco- rated with lights, and if you could picture the lively interest and pleasure my shut-ins get from this Christmas display you would know that it more than pays for the work.
In closing I want to thank our physician for the way in which he has stood by with help and encouragement, and the Community Nurses for their loyalty.
Respectfully submitted, EDITH ELDRIDGE,
Matron.
