OF THE

TOWN OFFICERS

OF THE

TOWN OF DIGHTON

FOR THE

Year Ending December 31, 1904.

FALL RIVER, MASS. PRESS OF SAMUEL E. FISKE, 19 COURT SQUARE 1905.

Selectmen's Report.

To the Inhabitants of Dighton :--

The tax rate this year is $12.80 on $1000, a reduction of $1.20, the Excise tax is $916.93, last year $958.02, a re- duction of $41.09, the Street Railway tax is $1154.93, last year $1592.88, a reduction of $437.75

The Massachusetts Highway Commission have allotted a generous sum of money for the construction as a State Highway Somerset Avenue in Taunton, beginning at the Dighton Three Mile River and propose to build a bridge over the river a little northwest of the present bridge and build in Dighton as far as Rose's corner. The new bridge according to the proposed plan will be higher, street will be straightened and the grade at Marston's hill reduced. It was intended to do the construction last fall but owing to the difficulties in adjusting abbuttors claims, the work has been delayed till spring. At the hearing before the Commissioners in Taunton in December we advocated an allowance for Somerset avenue and Pleasant street, and urged the early completion of the line from Somerset to Taunton. A committee was appointed at our last annual Town Meeting to report next year concerning per- manent improvement of our streets and bridges. Some

4

advocate the purchase of a stone crusher by the town but our knowledge gained from the experience of other towns of our size who have tried the experiment leads us to de- cide that we can purchase macadam cheaper than we can make it.

A contractor with every facility can do the work cheaper than we can and some towns that own crushers are buying macadam and letting there ,roads out by con- tract.

A good opportunity to purchase macadam will be available when the state is building on Somerset avenue and Pleasant street.

The work begun in the Fall of 1903 on Spring street was completed early in the spring of 1904 and proves to more than meet the expectation of its promoters.

A telephone exchange has been established with forty- four subscribers.

We attended a hearing before the Land and Harbor Commissioners and objected to the petition of the Old Colony Railroad Co., who asked for the priviledge to fill in a part of the outlet at Broad Cove bridge and build wooden abutments and drive the piles nearer together.

We asked for stone abutment with an outlet of sixty feet.

The Taunton sewerage disposal will have to be acted upon this year the limit will expire in June given by the State Board of Health when the sewerage should be taken from Taunton River.

The towns bordering on Taunton River should pro- test against further delays in the work of removing the

sewerage from Taunton river and demand that the order of the State Board of Health be obeyed.

An article in the warrant for the annual Town meet- ing will bring the matter before you. Disbursement for state aid have been $622 to thirteen beneficiaries, two have died during the year, Joseph Spencer and Josiah T. Horton. A settlement agreeable to a vote of the town was made with Orrin E. Jones on account of an accident on Chestnut street.

The claim of George G. Booth who was injured June 14, 1904, on account of a defect in the sidewalk south of the post-office building on Lincoln avenue was settled June 18 by the payment to him of one hundred dollars, ten dollars for nursing and twenty-five dollars to Dr. H. B. Baker for professional services.
