ANNUAL REPORT.
Report of the School Committee.
TO THE CITIZENS OF DIGHTON :
The past year has been marked by the number of changes in the membership of the school board, but withal a spirit of harmony has prevailed. A desire has been man- ifest to do the best possible for our schools with the present means and conditions.
It is certainly obvious to all, that our manner of living. is more expensive and complicated each year. Those who will give this fact careful thought will see that it applies to all our school life and expenditures.
In order that our children may be as well prepared for the demands upon them now and later as those in larger towns, we have thought best to place before you the amount which we feel could be wisely used to the best ad- vantage of the schools.
Probably many do not realize the difficulty we have in procuring and keeping good teachers. Our teachers are constantly leaving us for positions with better salaries and more ample school furnishings.
6
ANNUAL REPORT.
This committee, therefore, respectfully ask for the following appropriations :
Schools $3800 00
Repairs and incidentals
400 00
Books and supplies
450 00
High school tuition
500 00
Drawing and music
500 00
School supervision

Total appropriation $5950 00
In our superintendent we have a man who is doing most excellent work in our schools we feel assured. His method and thoroughness are evident.
The same efficient and faithful service which he gives to his work he expects of the teachers. We are for- tunate in that his home is here in our town since his ability and influence are used for the uplift of the com- munity.
For a full report of the work in school we refer you to his report which follows.

Resolved,-That we the members of the school commit- tee of the town of Dighton do hereby express our apprecia- tion of his character as a citizen, of his interest in public affairs and especially of his services as a member and chair- man of the school committee. And be it further
Resolved,-That these resolutions be spread upon the records of the school committee, and published in the next annual school report, and that a copy be sent to the family of the deceased.

ANNUAL REPORT.
Report of the Superintendent of Schools,
To the School Committee of the Town of Dighton :
I present herewith my third annual report as superin- tendent of schools. It is a pleasure to be able to state that there has been a strong movement forward along many lines, and that the general interest and co-operation of public spirited citizens in the past has been maintained. The committee have been active in behalf of the schools, the teachers have been untiring and intelligent in their work, and the pupils, for the most part, have been respon- sive and loyal to the schools.
PROGRESS.
In brief, the plan of grading as indicated last year has been carried out; especial attention has been given to methods of teaching, particularly in the conduct of the recitation, in reading, and in writing ; a new marking sys- tem with monthly report cards has been put in operation ; a tentative scheme for school declamation has been intro- duced ; the teachers' portfolio has been revised with vari- ous additions and suggestions ; directions for outline map work in geography and history have been prepared ; a time schedule, showing the relative time to be given to the various subjects in the course of study, has been arranged ; monthly reports of progress and attendance statistics are

now required of the teachers ; a monthly bulletin of at- tendance is issued by the superintendent; and a circular letter of information and suggestion is sent to the teachers with the bulletin.
The following page from the teachers' portfolio will give an idea of the spirit and purpose of the present year's work :
AIM AND PURPOSE
for 1904-1905.
Let us try to make the present year a good one, the best yet.
1. Continue to raise the standard of excellence.
2. Plan the work carefully and definitely.
3. Drill constantly and thoroughly.
4. Observe all rules and regulations.
5. Observe all portfolio directions.
6. Aim for special achievement in : -
a. Good writing.
b. Good form in oral and written language.
c. Right methods of study.
d. Good recitation.
e. Power § to think to tell { in good language. (Cultivate the reasoning power.)
d. Good discipline, especially in the sense of training.
7. Consider, -"What can I do to improve my school outside the regular work ?" "What can I do to increase the interest of parents and pupils in the school ?"
.

ANNUAL REPORT.
Suggestions :-- Pictures for the schoolroom, .
Improvement of school grounds, School library, Parent's days, Some form of manual training.
PROGRESS IN VIEW.
The immediate future calls for :
A complete and detailed revision of the course of study ; a careful study and comparison of the best methods of teaching ; a plan for the larger use of the public library by the schools ; more attention to the care and adornment of school buildings and school grounds; attention to the needs of children of the first three grades in the rural schools ; and the equipment of the schools with much needed text, reference and supplementary books.
