SELECTMEN'S REPORT
To the Inhabitants of Dighton:
After four years of war, a struggle unparalleled in history, embroiling nearly all of Europe, and our own country, an Armistice was signed.
We all rejoice because of the prospect of peace and the privilege of soon welcoming home most of our boys.
We have been generous in supporting the charities connected with the prosecution of the war, and liberal in the purchase of the Liberty Loan Bonds. About $258,000 has been invested in the third and fourth series. A reas- onable amount of military training is necessary and needed.
Our Company of State Guards should be encouraged and supported, its ranks should be kept up to the standard and when needed recruited from our citizenship.
STREET RAILWAY.
We must all admit that our Street Railway is a public convenience and necessity.
Its financial embarrassments, its deplorable road bed, its service to the public, its urgent demands for more revenue are subjects well and fully considered at numer- ous hearings given by the Public Service Commission. .
The interests of the Railway Company and the People have been ably presented, but no satisfactory solution of the difficulties has yet been reached.
7
ANNUAL REPORT
Being a medium of exchange of commodities between the country districts and cities, a source of relief to city congested sections, an aid in solving the homestead pro- ject, an easy and cheap mode of travel, we should demand reasonable fare charges and good service.
If a private company cannot meet the requirements, then we must look to the State, aided by the County, Cities and Towns, to provide such service by some method of public control.
HIGHWAY.
A section of 3,100 running feet of Williams Street to a point near Center Street has been macadamized, costing $6,000. One-half has been paid by the State.
We recommend that the work be continued the coming year and that a like sum be appropriated. We are assured that the State will pay one-half.
Summer Street has been greatly improved, widened, sidewalks built, macadamized twenty feet in width; the town paid $3,500. The construction was done by the Mount Hope Finishing Company.
Elm Street in the Broad Cove neighborhood has long been neglected. We are informed that Somerset is about to macadam from Buffinton's Corner to the Dighton line.
Owners of real estate offer to furnish stone and cart to the crushers.
Under these conditions the town ought to make a liberal appropriation.
Respectfully submitted,
CHARLES S. CHACE, Selectmen E. E. LINCOLN, of
GEO. B. GLIDDEN, Dighton.
Dighton, Dec. 31, 1918.
