REPORT OF THE OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.
The Overseers, in presenting this report, feel that some explana- tion is necessary to show why the cost of keeping the paupers is so much more per week this year than it was last. In the first place, the amount that was due Mr. Wheelock the Ist of February, 1885, together with some other bills that came in after the Treasurer's books were closed, amounting to about $350, should have gone into last year's report. And the amount of the new building, and other repairs that we were obliged to make, together with the insurance, makes the sum of $700 extra.
The general expenses of running the place, aside from this extra sum, is not any more than it was last year.
The milk has not brought so much by four or five cents a can as it did last year; and the cranberries we could not sell at any price, and had to put them into the cellar.
We respectfully present the following figures of the receipts and expenditures of this department : -

REPORT OF ENGINEERS.
The Engine Co. is, without doubt, as good a company as we ever had. It is well officered, and the men are first-class. The whole company numbers thirty-nine, all good, able-bodied men.
The Hook & Ladder Co., No. I, is comprised of sixteen mem- bers. The officers and men are A I.
At present, I think we have reason to be proud of our Fire Department. The machines are in good condition, and ready for use, should we be called upon. We have been wonderfully favored, as we have no " Fires " or " Alarms " to report.
E. CHAMBERLAIN, Clerk.
PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The Library has been liberally patronized during the past year, eight thousand one hundred and forty-four books having been given out. The trustees have purchased since Feb. 1, 1885, two hundred and seven books, the most of which have been in con- stant demand. Several works of reference have also been added. Thomas Minns, Esq., of Boston, a descendant of Pastor John Wilson, has made us a large donation of valuable books, and also a picture of Pastor Wilson's house in Quincy, erected in 1640. In a few weeks, we shall issue a supplement to the Catalogue.
During the month of April, 1885, additional shelf room was provided.
We ask for a liberal appropriation, in order that we may be able to supply the demand for fresh, new books. Interest in the Library by the reading public soon lags, without the impetus of the latest productions of the literary world.

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
In making a report of the school work during the past year, the Committee are happy to say that the schools are in a more satis- factory condition than at the time of our last report.
There is more interest shown by the scholars in their studies, and the relation of teachers and scholars is more harmonious.
