READING.
The phonetic method of reading and spelling has been intro- duced during the past year, and proves to be of great value, espe- cially in the lower grades, where it is most used. The combina- tions, changes and silent letters being marked in the book or by the teacher, show the scholar what sounds to give. By sounding the letters of a new word the learner very readily pronounces it. This method is of great benefit in articulation, which is a marked deficiency in our schools.
SPELLING.
The question may be asked, Will not this spelling by sound prevent the scholar from spelling correctly ? We think not.
In order to give the correct sounds, more thought must be given to the word than in spelling by letter. This will tend to fix the word more firmly in the learner's mind.
WRITING.
The teaching of this branch is, perhaps, the most difficult of any. The scholar is now taught to write when he first enters school. He copies words and sentences of ordinary conversation and every-day use. The first lessons are upon the slate, after which the practice paper is used, and, later on, the copy-book. The scholars are also taught to compose and write sentences, using capitals and terminal marks properly. In the higher grades, the work is continued in a similar manner. A visit to any of our schools, to inspect the writing of the primary scholars, is well worth the time given for it.
25
DEPORTMENT.
This is an important feature in our education, but one that is often neglected. The term is not to be applied to our conduct in· the school-room only. Our manners, at all times and in all places, should be without reproach.
Until recently, no text-book has been published on this sub- ject. The recent work called Lessons on Manners, lately intro- duced, seems to supply the want in this direction. It is used as a supplementary reader as well as for oral instruction. We look for good results.
STIMULANTS AND NARCOTICS.
In the winter of 1885, the Massachusetts Legislature passed a law that the school committee should provide instruction in physiology and hygiene in all the public schools, with special ref- erence to the effect of stimulants and narcotics on the human system. In compliance with this law, we have placed suitable text-books upon the subject in the hands of the teachers.
SCHOOL ACCOMMODATIONS.
The matter of school accommodations is worthy of careful con- sideration. We hope the time is at hand when the citizens of Medfield will furnish larger accommodations for the centre schools.
The primary school, numbering 43 scholars, is now located in a building unsuited to the needs of so large a school. The loca- tion is especially dangerous from passing teams. During recrea- tion, the children are exposed to danger from reckless driving or runaway teams. Several runaway accidents have occurred on Main Street during the past six months, but the teams have fortunately been stopped before reaching this point. Should such an accident occur among those little ones, the result would be most deplorable.
The grammar school building is not sufficient for the demands of the schools therein. In the upper school are four classes, in all numbering more than fifty scholars.
Two of these classes take advanced studies. The advanced class of last year, returning for a more extended course of study, is one of the best signs of progress we see in our schools. We have been obliged to hire an assistant teacher in this school, that each scholar may receive his rightful share of attention. We believe
26
the best results would be produced by establishing another school, to rank between the intermediate and upper schools. With the present course of study, we find it is inexpedient to press the scholar so hard as would be necessary to complete the course in eight years. Accordingly, the Committee have extended the time of the scholar's attendance at school to nine years. This addi- tional year will enable him to do his work more thoroughly, and be of great benefit.
Were two rooms added to the present building, thereby giving twice the amount of room, all the schools in the centre of the town could be well accommodated.
The building needs reshingling.
The building at the north part of the town would be much im- proved by painting both inside and outside.
The supply of water at the South School is unfit for use. The well is unfavorably located. A well should be dug where drainage cannot affect it.
ATTENDANCE.
The importance of regular attendance does not receive the attention it ought. The employment of children by our merchants, to perform errands or distribute bills in town during school-hours, should be discontinued. This practice has caused a marked difference in the attendance in the primary and intermediate schools during the past few weeks. During the week ending January 29, four cases of tardiness during one session were caused thus, in one school.
Parents cannot expect their children to make satisfactory progress in their studies, if they are allowed to remain at home for pleasure or fancied illness. While we think the school-room unfit for a sick child, we consider the street and street companions far from being productive of moral health.
Our schools were badly broken up by sickness during last winter and spring. Two homes are saddened by the loss of dear ones. The death of Durward Bullard, soon followed by that of Harry Parker, removed two bright scholars from the primary school. The loss will long be remembered.
The number of children of school age in town, as returned to the Committee by the Assessors, May 1, 1885, is 203.
