ENGINEERS' REPORT.
REPORT OF THE BOARD OF ENGINEERS OF MEDFIELD.
Fire Department appointed the first day of May, 1886, for one year, is as follows : -
October 23, there was an alarm of fire at 6 P.M., by the burning of Mr. William Kingsbury's and others' meadow, in what is known as Broad Meadows. About twenty of the Engine Com- pany, with the necessary tools, went by Crosby's Team; and in about two hours had it subdued, and left two men to watch it. On Sunday night, Jan. 30, 1887, at 11.30, an alarm was sounded. The fire was the house and stable of the late Albert H. Wiley, on the Dedham road, about a mile from the village. The Fire Department responded; but the flames had such headway their services were of little avail, and the property was entirely de- stroyed.
The engineers, on examining and testing the hose of the depart- ment, found that there was a good deal of it that was not good for anything, and thought it advisable to get some new. So three hundred feet of new hose were purchased.
Both companies are well officered and manned.
The Engine Company has twenty members, including officers.
The Hook & Ladder Company has nineteen members, includ- ing officers.

BENNETT WILSON, Engineers.

PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The past year has been a successful one in the history of our Library. The adoption of the plan of calling upon the reading public for suggestions in the purchasing of new books has awak- ened a new interest and proved beneficial.
Nearly two hundred and fifty volumes have been added during the year. When the number shall have reached three hundred, a new supplement to the Catalogue will be issued.
August 24, Prof. A. E. Sloan, of Bergen Point, N.J., gave a public reading in Chenery Hall for our benefit. He was ably as- sisted by the following local talent : Medfield Brass Band, Misses Gertie and Nettie Hamant, Mrs. J. A. S. Monks, Mrs. Nelly A. Washburn, Miss Mabel Morse. The programme was excellent, and much appreciated by the large audience present. The sum of $34.65 was netted, which, together with the fines, has been nearly all expended by the Trustees for books, binding, cov- ering, etc.
During the year ending February 1, eight thousand five hundred and fifty-two books have been given out.
At the special solicitation of persons living in the suburbs, we have added the hour from 3 to 4 o'clock Saturday P.M. to the regular hours.
We ask for the same appropriation as last year, and feel sure that it will be well expended.
Our financial account will be found in the Selectmen's Report, and it seems unnecessary to repeat it here.
Submitted for the Board of Trustees,
J. HERBERT BAKER,
Secretary.
