REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
To the Citizens of Medfield : -
In submitting the school report this year, the Committee feel that the general condition of the schools is quite satisfactory. There have been three new teachers elected to fill the vacancies ; i.e., North School, grammar and primary school assistants.
We cannot expect to bring our schools to that point of excel- lence reached by some of our sister towns, unless we adopt similar systems of study and supervision.
While we have a definite course of study for the lower grades, we have none for the higher or advanced classes. Could we have an efficient system of supervision, we feel that better work would be done. In some of the neighboring towns, the plan of hiring one supervisor for two towns has been found quite satisfactory. Could such an arrangement be made with the town of Dover or Millis, much good work might be done.
REPAIRS MADE.
The necessary repairs have been made on the North and Centre School buildings. At the Centre, the grammar school building was newly shingled, a birch floor was laid in the grammar school room, and new furniture -consisting of single chairs and desks - placed therein. The school-room at the North building was partially painted, and the outside platform repaired.
REPAIRS CALLED FOR.
The North School building shows the effects of thirty-six years of hard work, and we recommend that it be thoroughly reno- vated to suit the needs of the school now held there. If the lower room and anteroom were remodelled and fitted for use instead of the upper room, we think it would be of advantage to the school. 'The scholars are chiefly of small size ; and the stairs are not only tiresome, but dangerous.
27
PRIMARY SCHOOL, ACCOMMODATIONS.
Much to our regret, the matter of providing a building for the primary school was postponed to the coming town-meeting. As the centre of our town increases in population each year, our schools increase. This is noticeably the case in the primary school.
Owing to the increase since Sept. 1, 1886, it was found that one teacher could not do all the work required, and the room in its crowded condition could not be kept in a healthful state. Conse- quently, the Committee have been obliged to remove the third class to sittings in the intermediate room, and recitations in the anteroom under care of a new teacher.
It is evident to all that the primary school needs a larger and more suitable room in a less dangerous and noisy locality ; and it is hoped that, now the town is looking more favorably on modern improvements, this matter may receive due attention.
The School Committee consider the plan reported by the com - mittee chosen for the purpose as best meeting the necessities of the case.
One pupil of the primary school, Dana Dyer, has died during the year.
A pupil of the North school, disabled by the kick of a horse, still keeps up in his studies. Such perseverance in spite of pain is commendable.
The number of children reported by the Assessors, May 1, 1886, of school age, is 179. Registered in school, winter term, 187; spring term, 173 ; fall term, 199.
