Parents and others are requested to carefully examine the above list of births, marriages and deaths, and if errors or omis- sions are discovered, report them to the town clerk, in order that the record may be corrected. Herewith are extracts from the Revised Laws. Section 6 of Chapter 29 of said laws requires that "Parents within forty days after the birth of a child, and every householder, within forty days after a birth in his house, shall cause notice thereof to be given to the clerk of the city or town in which such child is born. Every householder in whose house a death occurs, shall, within five days thereafter, cause notice thereof to be given to the board of health, or, if the selectmen constitute such board, to the town clerk." Blanks for the return of births and deaths can always be obtained of the town clerk.
Respectfully submitted, HORACE C. ADAMS, Town Clerk.

TWENTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE
TRUSTEES OF THE TAFT PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The Trustees of the Taft Public Library herewith submit their twenty-eighth annual report.
With the exception of the second year, 1882-1883, when the number of books issued was 6,246, this has been the most success- ful year in the history of the library. The circulation has been 5,590, exceeding by 1,209 volumes that of 1907.
The open shelves and the regulation entitling each card holder to two books (one being non-fiction) have contributed largely to this result. The circulation of non-fiction shows an encouraging increase.
For two years the library has subscribed for "The New Eng- land Historical Genealogical Magazine." This year through the generosity of subscribers, 9 periodicals have been contributed monthly and the interest of the patrons in these contributions seems to demand that the library subscribe for at least one other magazine.
The cataloguing is steadily progressing.
During the year there have been two art exhibits: one on Italian Gardens ; one on India.
One copy of Mendon Annals has been sold. Seven books have been destroyed from fear of infection.
The library has reached a period which necessitates a greater outlay if its present contents are to be preserved. Many books should be rebound at once ; some standard works should be re- placed. During the past two years several volumes of Scott, Dickens and Irving have been replaced, but with the present appropriation, each old book is replaced at the cost of a new one.
There is an increasing demand for reference books. The bound magazines afford an abundance of popular material, but in
23
the absence of an Index they are practically useless for this pur- pose. In this connection the Trustees call attention to the fact that the file of "The Century" is incomplete between the years of 1901 and 1906.
The Trustees in behalf of the citizens wish to express their gratitude for all the gifts to the library during the past year. We also wish to thank Mrs. George, to whose efficient service the year's success is so largely due. We strongly recommend an in- creased appropriation.
Respectfully submitted,
EARLE LOWELL, JULIA F. DARLING, MOSES U. GASKILL, FRANK H. WOOD, F. G. ATWELL, Trustees Taft Public Library.
