Report of Engineers of Fire Department

East Pepperell, Mass., January 1, 1944 To The Honorable Board of Selectmen :

Your apparatus is in first-class condition. Through the. O. C. D. you were allotted a Twin Coach Trailer Pump equipment with a six cylinder motor-500 gal. cap., Hale Pump-hose-nozzles-pump cans and all necessary fittings to operate same. We think this will be a valuable addition to the Department. The only cost to the Town being $5.00 for posting a bond.

We have installed a signal light at the corner of Main and Foster Streets. The purpose of this light is to try to avert any accident at this corner. In the past the drivers have had some very close calls at this corner, especially on .the route up Main Street. This light operates on the flashing system. All drivers on leaving the Fire Station will put on the switch that operates this light. The law is that traffic approaching a flashing red light shall come to a complete stop, then proceed with caution. We hope all will obey this signal, thus averting accident to themselves, also to your apparatus.

We have on hand 4,000 feet of ?1/2 inch hose in first-class condition and recommend $500.00 for the purchase of new hose for the coming year.

We also recommend the regular appropriation of $3,000.00 same as last year.

1

Our fire alarm system is still operating and we will try to keep it going another year.

We have been handicapped some by being short of help. some of the men being called in the armed forces, some work- ing out of town ; but with the help from our Subs and, Auxil- iary Firemen, and also town's people, in fact have seen some women out helping to beat out some of those small stubborn fires, we have had very good luck. At this time we would like to thank all who have tried to help us in any way. Your fire loss has been very small this past year-let's all join in and try to keep it down.

As this report reaches every citizen, the same precautions we had last year should be in order for the coming year.

.A. Don't let rubbish accumulate on your premises.

B. Remember the law requires a permit to start fires in the open.

C. Have your chimneys cleaned regularly.

D. Remember the law in regard to storage of oil.

E. In case of fire call the department at once. A minute may mean the saving of your property. Act quickly.

We want to thank the Telephone Operators for their co- operation and efficiency; also the Police Department and Se- lectmen and all other town officials.
