REPORT OF TRUSTEES OF BROOKS LIBRARY
We greatly appreciate the privilege of bringing a report of Brooks' Free Library for 1932 to the tax-payers of Harwich in this manner.
We feel this year has been one of the best, not only in acquiring volumes but in service to the town's people. Many served by other libraries have made use of our non- fiction and rare histories. Several summer visitors have discovered this library's existance and many, more locally, have become interested, keeping its circulation up to an average of two hundred books per week.
The magazines, about twenty-five in number, are ap- preciated by all and there is a good assortment from a re- liable business magazine to one suitable for the youngest reader.
The non-fiction section, already considered excellent for so small a library, is fast growing. This section will soon become the library's greatest asset and will equal in time any found in the larger libraries of the state. All this is due to the kindness of the late George Nickerson of South Harwich.
For the year 1932 the trustees of the George W. Nick- erson fund have used $117.41 and if space permitted would be very glad to publish the list of books this sum has bought. There is still $218.49 interest unexpended at this date.
It is interesting to note that the most popular non- fiction books read in this library concern Cape Cod. They are "Land Ho ! 1620" by W. Sears Nickerson and Tarbell's "Cape Cod Ahoy!"
At this time the trustees would like to thank anyone who has so kindly presented books to the library, particu- larly Mrs. Rebecca Smith for what she has so kindly given in the years past as well as this.
Mrs. Bernard Andrews of Harwich Center made it
37
possible for the library to complete its card catalog by her gift of $10.00 to Miss Underwood. In the name of the library we thank her for this token of her interest.
Mr. Raymond Rich has been very generous in his recommendations concerning non-fiction and the fine books bought at his suggestion have been greatly in demand.
This year the three chimneys of the building have been entirely reconstructed. The trustees were aware that the chimneys were in very poor condition but even an ex- amination did not reveal what danger threatened.
The chimney used by Mr. Hunt was cracked and the plaster so poor it could be picked away with the fingers. The one used by the American Legion Post was not even plastered inside and in the upper story daylight was visible between the bricks. In one place in the meeting room of the Post, the wood next to the brick was charred.
Today the chimneys are as safe as good material, fire proof lining and reliable workmanship can make them.
