REPORT OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

In accordance with custom and law, the School Com- mittee submit their annual Report of the condition of the schools and school-property in town for the year ending Jan. 31st, 1880, as follows. Assuming that the re- port of the selectmen made Feb. 1st, 1879, as to the condition of the treasury, was correct, there was an unex- pended balance of the appropriation for the support of schools, of

$2,627 28

To which add the town grant of

2,800 00

The dividend of the Mass. school fund, . 232 09

Also received of East Bridgewater for tuition, 9 21

Making a total,

$5,668 58

Of which there has been paid for teachers'

wages, .

$2,682 25

Fuel,

175 05

Incidentals, .

68 08

East Bridgewater for tuition, .

109 58

Making a total of .

$3,034 96

Balance remaining in the treasury, .

$2,633 62

According to the report of the selectmen, made Feb. 1st, 1879, there was an unexpended balance in the

31

treasury, of the appropriation for repairs and school- furnishings, of . $4 29 .

To which add the town grant of

200 00

Making a total of .

$204 29

There has been paid for repairs,

$241 31

" furnishings,

41 98

Making a total,

$283 29

Overdrawn the appropriation,

$79 00

The largest items for repairs have been the painting of the Centre Grammar School-house outside and inside, the painting of the Centre Primary outside, the painting of the East School-house outside, the fencing of the North School-house lot, and new heating apparatus for the Centre Grammar School-house. The Committee have expended as small a sum as could possibly be got along with, and very much less than the wants and safety of the school-property demanded. At the meeting of the Committee for organization, the Committee thought best to refer the subject of repairs to a sub-committee of two, to examine the school-property and report to the Board the needed repairs, and under the sanction of the Board to make the repairs. The Committee are of the opinion that this plan has worked to the advantage of the town, although the citizens of the town show, by their keeping the School Committee at its present unwieldy size, that they believe that there is safety in a multitude of counsel- lors. For the ensuing year there are three school-houses need painting, and several of them need to be shingled. We also call the attention of the town to the lack of maps,

32

charts, and other apparatus for studying and illustrating the studies pursued in the schools. For the purpose of repairs on school property and school furnishings, we recommend the town to raise $400.
