In the spring the Road Commissioners found the roads in some parts of the town much poorer than in other parts, and therefore thought it best not to divide the money among the several districts, but to do the work where it was most need- ed, and have endeavored to do thorough work and, so far as possible, have made permanent improvements.

22

The money appropriated for sidewalks has been expended in connection with the road money, thereby utilizing much material that had to be moved that otherwise would have been of little or no value to the roads.

Believing it to be much cheaper and easier to keep roads in repair where sidewalks are built, besides making safe for public travel many places which are now dangerous, the commissioners think it policy for the town to continue to appropriate the sum of five hundred dollars to build and maintain sidewalks in such parts of the town as they are most needed.

Owing to the increased travel on many of the roads and the scarcity of good gravel in most parts of the town, and the long distance which most of it must be carted, the commis- sioners find the appropriation insufficient to keep the roads in such condition as would be satisfactory to the voters of the town. With the large quantities of stone which clutter up our gravel hills, and the large expense which must neces- sarily be incurred in removing what might otherwise be our best road material, the commissioners think the time has come that it is not only economy, but important, that the town should provide some way to procure a stone crusher for use in the early spring.
