SELECTMEN'S GENERAL REPORT.

FOR FISCAL YEAR OF 1898-ENDING DEC. 31ST.

To the Inhabitants of the Town of Reading:

Under appropriate headings, we herewith submit the following report for your consideration and acceptance.

DEPARTMENT OF STREETS.

While we have not had the customary number of special ap- propriations with which to deal, yet the volume of work in this department has aggregated quite as large as in recent years, and it has been found necessary to overdraw the regular appropriations for " High ways " and the " clearing away of snow." We regret this necessity ; but, owing to severe storms of rain and snow occur- ring in the Spring and Fall, and considering the safety and convenience of the public, it seemed only wise and expedient to use our best judgment in the matter, feeling certain of your approval.

We wish, especially, to call your attention to the need for re- pairing Haven Street hill, an appropriation for which we have ask- ed in the warrant for Town Meeting.

We have been unable to extend Valley Street as we were instructed to do, because we have been unable to make satisfactory terms with the owners of the land we had in mind when we report- ed to the Town.
