Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8

We have changed the name of Valley Street to "VINE " Street ; and have made a proper record of same.

Our report of the laying out of Howard Place as a public way will be presented to the Town once more, at the forthcoming

16

March meeting. We suggest your careful consideration of this subject.

Reports regarding other new streets will also be brought before you at the same meeting.

REMARKS AND SUGGESTIONS.

It is evident to the Board of Selectmen that the Town will be soon compelled to seek other sources for street building material, and for repairs, in the immediate future; for conveniently located gravel beds are being fast depleted. The use of crushed stone or kindred material would seem to be imperative.

We therefore suggest that instructions be given the incoming Board of Selectmen to investigate this subject and report at some future meeting.

LAAW SUITS AGAINST THE TOWN.

Cases of Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Acct. of Henry H. Nowell) vs.Town of Reading; and Ipswich Mills vs. Town of Read- ing, are still pending in Court, in charge of the Town's attorneys, and we have nothing new to report.

DRINKING FOUNTAIN.

Agreeably to the Town's vote at the last Annual Town Meet- ing, we have caused to be erected, at the southerly end of the Common, a Drinking Fountain, which has demonstrated by its con- venience during the summer months that .it has been a wise ex- penditure of money.

LAND.

Regarding the land on the easterly side of John Street :- Ow- ing to our inability to arrange satisfactory terms with a would-be purchaser, we have not complied with the Town's instructions to sell the same.

The statements of department finances will be found on suc- ceeding pages ; they have been carefully compiled, and accurately

17

transcribed. We trust that they will be found satisfactory, and not adversely criticized.

We recommend the following appropriations for the year :
