PREFACE.
Since our last edition of the Waltham and Watertown Directory, the first named place has changed its form of government from that of a town to a city, and the names of the city officers will be found in the present number in their appropriate place. The city and township here represented are noted for the activity and enterprise of their people, and, probably, no community in this section, the past few years, has exceeded them in all the elements of manufac- turing growth, success and importance.
No city at the present day is satisfied without a directory, issued annually, and a glance at our advertising pages will show that business men have liberally patronized the work, for which the publishers acknowledge their obligations.
It will be noticed that a new and important feature has been in- troduced into the present edition in the form of a map of the City of Waltham.
We would urge that every person should have at their business place or residence a directory of the city from time to time as pub- lished, not only as a daily convenience, but as a valuable record of local history.
Persons consulting the Directory, are reminded of the importance of knowing the precise spelling of a name, before looking for it, as names pronounced the same are often spelled quite differently and appear on different pages.

THE OLDEST AND LARGEST SHORTHAND SCHOOL IN NEW ENGLAND.
By our METHOD all students are enabled with the first Exercise to write ordinary language with from one-sixth to one-tenth as many strokes as the common long-hand writing, and consequently much more rapidly. Each subsequent Exercise enables them to write with fewer strokes than the preceeding one ; therefore, if a student has inclination and opportunity to practice he is CERTAIN to gain in speed, and in from three to six months writing with fewer strokes than any other system, can attain the highest degree of proficiency. For several rea- sons it is easier than any other to read.
Ours is a MODERN METHOD; each step is applied practically as in the modern plan of learning other Arts and Sciences.
"UNIVERSAL PHONOGRAPHY," our text-book, con- taining a large part of our Method has had such a phenomenal and unprecedented sale that a second Edition had to be published in the same month as the first, and in the second month twice as many as either the first or second Edition. It is rapidly superseding former methods, being taught and used in nearly all sections of the country.
In fact, our Method is more rapid, more legible, more systematic and therefore easier than any other, as attested by the host of "experts" reporting verbatim with it, Court Proceedings, Sermons, Lectures, Bus- iness Men's Letters, etc.
Strongly endorsed by Thomas Hill, D. D., L. L. D., Ex-Pres- ident of Harvard University ; R. M. Pulsifer of R. M. Pulsifer & Co., props., Boston Herald ; Youth's Companion ; N. E. Conservatory of Music ; N. E. Journal of Education ; Popular Educator ; and nearly all the prominent newspapers in the United States.
The best facilities for securing remunerative positions for our graduates.
