BROOKLINE.
There are people still living in Brookline, who have seen from a small town grow the most wealthy one in America-and one destined to become a great city.
One hundred years ago, the first census revealed a population of 518, and in 1840 it had only reached 1265. In 1740 there were 61 dwelling houses.
Brookline is the richest town in the United States for its size. The valuation, which in 1850 was $5,000,000, has increased to $46,500,000. . This is exclusive of bank and corporation stocks held by individuals. Its wonderful increase and growth is due to its attractiveness as a place of residence. Forty years ago it was a farming town. The occupants of the land sold to residents and real estate dealers until it is now filled with attractive streets, terraces and parks, and palatial residences of the rich.
In the last ten years it has nearly doubled in value.
It is desirable as a city for residence, easy of access and no proba- bility that commercial interests of Boston will interfere, or mar its beauty. It is an important attraction to live in so wealthy and refined a community with the best of Churches and educational advantages.
Taxation and growth of the city,-Male polls, 3,250; Female Polls, 118; Houses, 1,628; New Houses, 96; Unfinished Houses, 44; 301 transfers of real estate since last year. Persons paying a property tax, 1,192 men, 275 women; 228 estates, trusts and firms. 56 non-resident trusts, etc .; 177 non- resident real estate holders; 1,305 horses and 538 cows.
Increase of personal property over the year 1889 was $1,303,000. and in real estate of $2,701,000. a total gain of $4,004,000.
