The Town of

FAIRHAVEN Massachusetts

F AIRHAVEN is one of those few towns which has all the conveniences of the city, without the attendant hustle, bustle and commercialism of the larger communities. The discriminating person who seeks rest and comfort among congenial surroundings will find it here. Fairhaven enjoys the advantage of a cool breeze even during the hottest day as the prevailing wind is from the southwest which sweeps across Buzzards Bay, and when Boston is sweltering the temperature of Fairhaven is about 10 degrees lower with air stirring. Its situation on the east bank of the Acushnet river near the head of Buzzards Bay, and the possession of one of the finest harbors along the coast, entitles it to the name which it bears. Many of its townspeople are identified with the big interests in the city of New Bedford, situated on the west bank of the river, and own fine homes which add. charm to its natural environments. One . of the chief characteristics of the place is the fine public spirit and civic pride that makes it an ideal spot. The plans evolved for the development of the town have been made possible through the interest which the late Henry H. Rogers took in his birthplace.

MAGNIFICENT ROADWAYS AND PUBLIC BUILDINGS

No town of five thousand inhabitants enjoys such fine roadways, and so many magnificent public buildings as those in Fairhaven. The excellent modern streets and highways have been extended year after year. The handsome public buildings are grouped near the centre of the town. The Unitarian Memorial Church, erected in memory of the mother of Mr. Rogers, is the most imposing of these edifices, with its connecting parish house and parsonage with beautiful and spacious lawns, is considered one of the finest groups of church buildings in New England. The elaborate interior fittings are even more superb than the exterior. Another architectural gem is the Millicent Library, a gift to the town in memory of a daughter of Mr. Rogers. It has as complete a collection of books as many large city libraries. Opposite from the library is the Town Hall building, a splendid specimen of civic architecture. Erected as a memorial to Mrs. Abbie P. Rogers, the wife of Mr. Rogers. Other beautiful structures built by Mr. Rogers in the town are the Masonic building, the Rogers school, Tabitha Inn, and the High School. This school is a remarkable one in many ways; first, in its appointments, which surpass anything of the kind to be found in few if any cities in the world. Its location, at the Fairhaven approach to the bridge, is magnificent, a fitting in- troduction to the visitor entering Fairhaven. The interior equipment is fully in keeping with the exterior appearance.

A COMMUNITY OF FINE HOMES

Fairhaven has broad, well-aligned streets, shaded by fine old trees, which are bordered by handsome residences, usually set among spacious and well-kept lawns. The thickly settled portion of the village is compact, so that one travels but a short distance before arriving amid rural scenes.

SPORTS AT THE STADIUM

The High School Stadium, another gift of Mr. Rogers, is the scene of many interesting games, track meets, pageants, fetes, etc., as the townspeople enjoy all the privileges.

Golfers can find enjoyment at the Reservation Course in Mattapoisett, one of the oldest in the country and most attractive and well kept.

BOATING, BATHING AND FISHING

Fairhaven has everything to offer in the way of boating, bathing and fishing. The upper reaches of the river are as quiet a sheet of water as on an inland lake. The lower harbor and Buzzards Bay offers an opportunity for use of larger craft, speed boats for cruising along the coast or across the bay into Vineyard Sound, the great waterway of a continent. Both salt and fresh water fishing are very good and convenient. Ten minutes walk from the centre is the bathing beach, the popular resort of both Fairhaven and New Bedford, conducted under the direction of the Union Street Railway. The water is of medium temperature, and the sloping nature of the shore ensures safety for the bather. Here is a fine group of bath-houses with bathing pier and Clambake pavilions where they and the grounds about them are kept in perfect order.

STEAMER EXCURSIONS

Fron New Bedford there are many steamer excursions to many points. On the beautiful islands of Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket are many places of interest. Gay Head, famous for its revolving light, and citizens who are the last of the race of Indians that once inhabited the island, also for specimens of the potter's art made from the bright-colored clay from the cliffs of Gay Head. Other interest- ing points on Marthas Vineyard island are the north shore, famed for its mag- nificent water views; Oak Bluffs, a summer city of cottages; and Edgartown, a quaint old town at the southerly end of the island. Farther at sea is the island of Nantucket, a village, town, and county all in itself. This is a curious and inter- esting island, whose genial and sturdy people live the same sort of lives their forefathers lived two hundred years ago. Once famed as a whaling port, now one of the most important fishing ports in the east, fine homes there built by the fortunate captains of old are now owned by wealthy summer residents. The actors' colony at Siasconsett, a quaint group and it is a picturesque spot. Two of the best golf courses in the country are on Nantucket Island.

TROLLEY TRIPS

There are innumerable places of interest within easy reach of Fairhaven by the trolley cars. The New Bedford & Onset line, which passes through the town, traverses Mattapoisett and Marion, both of which boasts of many fine summer estates, then through the old town of Wareham, to Onset, which has a somewhat flaring fame as the home of every sort of religion extant. The car line has its eastern terminus at Buzzards Bay about 25 miles away. All along the car line there are interesting bits of rural and shore scenery.

CLAMBAKES ON HISTORIC GROUND

Fairhaven has gained a just renown in the old-fashioned clambake. No summer is complete in the New England summer resort without a succulent clambake. Clams cooked in seaweed heated on hot stones, together with all the seasonable vegetables, is a delicacy. They serve the bakes in the pavilions near the Fort Phoenix reservation, one of the most picturesque spots in the east, and

every foot of which is historic ground. The narrow cart path which runs down to the fort is known as Garrison lane, for it was here that the "Red Coats" were met by Fairhaven's brave defenders. The old laneway is bordered by stunted cedar trees, through whose sparse branches the winds of a hundred years have blown. The straggling stone walls that skirt the side of the roadway are monu- ments to the patience of the early settlers.

THE GATEWAY TO CAPE COD

The motorist will delight in the wonderful roads and shore scenes in this section. The Provincetown trip is 90 miles and every mile of modern highway within view of either the ocean, Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod Canal or Vineyard Sound. The Plymouth loop is another popular auto route for motorists. Also the Woods Hole, Hyannis and Canal trip.

SPOTS TO CHARM THE VISITOR

Fairhaven has many other attractive spots to charm the visitor. In the cen- tre of the town a wonderful transformation scene occurred a few years ago. What was once a muddy-bottomed pond has been filled in with hundreds of thousands of cubic feet of earth, brought from a mile away. Over two years were occupied in this work alone, and since then the park was set out with trees and shrubbery, until it is now a beautiful spot. The old wharves along the river front' which were the scenes of activity during the whaling days are now alive with the building and repairing of pleasure craft.

FORT PHOENIX AND VICINITY

The fort proper is buttressed by immense ledges of granite. In places these ledges rise almost perpendicularly from the shore and from the top one can get a fine view of the lower harbor, and on clear days even the distant heights of the Elizabeth islands and Marthas Vineyard are discernible. The great triangular- shaped beacon here surmounted by a black ball, serves as one of the ranges by which pilots follow the channel of the harbor. Following the shore east from the fort one gets a good idea of the nature of the coast of this section where numer- ous substantial summer cottages dot the shore line. Fort Phoenix shore has been a favorite spot for those interested in gathering specimens of sea mosses.

SCONTICUT NECK

Sconticut Neck, a strip of land narrowing as it runs southerly into Buzzards Bay, is within easy driving distance of the village. It is an interesting section of the town for the visitor. Here are some of the first houses erected in this part of New England. Still standing is the chimney of the old John West house, one of the few homes spared at the time the British troops marched down the Neck in 1778. The owner of the house was a Tory. Most of the Neck shore property has been taken up for summer homes. Down on the tip of the Neck is an attractive summer colony. One can here get a fine view of the bay, and at night the great revolving red and white light at Gay Head is seen quite plainly. Jutting out from the mainland are a series of great ledges. Off these ledges and all along in this vicinity are some of the finest fishing grounds in New England.
