This gigantic research facility is the most recent instance of the spirit of cooperation which exists between the world famous educational institutions located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

President Nathan Pusey of Harvard noted the cooperative spirit between the learned friends who work together as good neighbors in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when he said:

"One of the most famous instances of cooperation with competition between these educational institu- tions was the war time effort which saw M. I. T.'s Radiation Laboratory experimenting with and developing new radar equipment for our armed forces while just down the Charles River Harvard's Radio Research Lab- oratory raced to invent new radar counter measures to neutralize the developments of Tech's scientists.

"Today similar examples of cooperative effort may be found in such varied fields as business adminis- tration, urban studies and international affairs."

This spirit of cooperation also exists between the institutions of learning and the city government. "Town and gown" relationships are at the highest peak.

Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are among the 10 top taxpayers in the City of Cambridge and are among the leading employers in the city.

A Decade of Progress 1950-1960: Cambridge Buildings by Cambridge Architects

During the past decade Cambridge has been fortunate in the abundance of new structures of high architectural quality which will contribute to the aesthetic appearance of the City for future generations. While an exhaustive list of outstanding new buildings would more than fill these pages, special recognition is limited here to those designed by architects living, working or teaching in Cambridge. Even on this restricted basis, however, it has not been possible to include all such structures worthy of mention.

SQUARE

TECHNOLOGY SQUARE is .... a five-minute walk to the Greater Boston rapid transit system ... . a three-minute drive to new expressways serving the metropolitan area ... . a ten-minute drive to downtown Boston's commercial and retail districts a fifteen- minute drive to Logan International Airport.

Photo by: Robert D. Harvey Studio

TECHNOLOGY SQUARE, a new 14-acre office and research center now under development adjacent to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, affords an extraordinary combination of locational advantages. Outstanding among these is the con- centration in Cambridge of those elements so vital to research-oriented firms -- internationally recognized university facilities, leading research, electronic and nucleonic companies, supplementary industrial services, and experienced personnel .

TECHNOLOGY SQUARE is the result of cooperation between the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority and the combination of Cabot, Cabot & Forbes, Inc., and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The site was the location of the former Lever Brothers Plant and the Rogers Block Urban Redevelopment Project, both of which were purchased by C. C. & F. and M. I. T. The projected development will be entirely tax-paying.

---

575 TECHNOLOGY SQUARE is the first unit planned in the new center and will provide modern office and laboratory space for firms who will benefit from proximity to M.I.T. and the locational advantages of the site
