THE HIGH SCHOOL.

E. C. ADAMS, PRINCIPAL. O. B. MERRILL, ASSISTANT. LUTHER DAME,

MISS A. A. SENTER,

The High School is in a more satisfactory condition than it has been for many years. The work is done in a thorough manner. The discipline is excellent. The committee see no reason why the school may not equal any in the State. Miss Senter has been ill dur- ing the year, and her place has been supplied by a substitute, at present Miss Sara A. Leonard.

ABOVE STATE STREET.

These are two in number, both in Forrester street; one for boys, under the charge of Miss Chute and Miss Frothingham, and the other for girls, under the charge of Miss Toppan and Miss Somerby. Both of these schools have been in a highly prosperous and efficient condition throughout the year. The rooms have been filled and the pupils, as a general thing, have been interested in their studies and disposed to improve the opportunity afforded them.

The teachers and scholars, during the year, have established in each school a library of useful and en- tertaining books for the use of pupils out of school. Nearly three hundred volumes have been collected, and the libraries have been put in successful operation without any charge to the city whatever. The books appears to have increased the interest felt by the scholars in their school, and promise to be of increas- ing service as time goes on.
