If parents could be induced to visit the schools more fre- quently there would be more cordial co-operation with the teachers and their confidence in the good management of the schools would be greatly increased.
CHANGE IN GEOGRAPHIES
For a long time the School Committee have been contem- plating a change in the text books used in the primary and grammar schools for geography. The Harper's which had been used for many years was an excellent book in its day. But many changes in the plan of teaching geography had taken place since it was introduced and there was a general desire for a new text book on that subject. After carefully examining many books the School Board finally decided on Frye's Elementary Geography for the fourth, fifth and sixth grades, and Frye's Grammar School Geography for the seventh, eighth and ninth grades. These books were procured and introduced into all of the schools in the fall of 1902.
REPORT OF TRUANT OFFICER
Gentlemen of the School Committee :
The annual report for the year ending June 25, 1902, which I have the honor to submit, is not essentially different from that of preceding years.
As usual most of the unnecessary absence of children from school originates in the neglect or indifference of parents. Wher ever the parents are interested in the progress of their children at school, truancy is rarely found.
The manufactories where children are employed have been frequently visited, and most of the employers have cordially co-operated in enforcing the law in respect to the employ- ment of children. In a few instances where the law has not been complied with, children have been sent out to at- tend school.
The census of children of school age requires under the present law much time and labor. This by the regulations of the School Committee is a part of the duties of the truant officer. An examination of the table appended to this re- port will show the results for September, 1902.
Respectfully, ROBERT G. ALLEN,
Truant Officer.
