In consequence of the trenches being open for laying the water pipes during the time the lights were to be discontin- ued, as per vote of the town, it was deemed dangerous to the safety of the public to adhere to the vote. There are now 32 gas and 22 oil lamps. The addition of more lights every year, causes an increase of expense for gas and oil and lighting, which should be considered when making appropriation therefor. The gas company's bills have not been satisfactory the past year, but no redress could be ob- tained. For instance, from Oct. 1, 1869, to Jan. 1, 1870, 20 lights cost for gas, at the rate of $6.35 per light, and for 31 lights for the same time the past year $9.18 per light. The same person had the care of lighting them, and says that there was no material difference in the time they were burn- ing. At the rate charged for gas, the use of oil would be much cheaper.

ordered the Treasurer to pay the bills, presuming that the Water Commissioners had ordered the lighting of the lamps, and that the contractor would refund the amount, but he re- fuses to do so. There is no doubt that the lighting was done by some one, thereby making the town liable, but by whom or whose order we have not been able to find out. The bill de- scribes that thirty-one lights burnt 72 hours each for thirty- one nights, from 8 o'clock P. M., to 3} o'clock A. M.]
