Fireproof Coal
This Department co-operated with the State in its crusade against fireproof coal during the coal shortage. Although through technicalities we were unable to bring offenders to trial we suc- ceeded in ridding the City of poor quality coal.

Report of Board of Fence Viewers
To His Honor the Mayor and the Honorable Board of Aldermen, City of Melrose, Mass.
Gentlemen:
We, the undersigned Board of Fence Viewers for the City of Melrose hereby respectfully submit the following report for the year of 1923.
Six hearings for division line fences and determination of boundary lines were held by the Board in City Hall, Melrose dur- ing the year, 1923, and Decrees were made on five petitions and a further hearing was deemed advisable on the sixth hearing.
Although the parties in question were privileged under the Statute governing the Board of Fence Viewers to appeal from a decision or a Decree of said Board, no appeal was taken by any of the parties.
The Honorable Board of Aldermen with the approval of the Mayor appropriated the sum of twenty-five dollars for expenses for the Board of Fence Viewers and we respectfully request that the same sum be appropriated for the year 1924.

Report of Wire Department
Melrose, Mass., Jan. 2, 1924.
To the Honorable Mayor and Board of Aldermen,
City of Melrose, Mass.
Gentlemen:
I respectfully submit the following report of the Wire Depart- ment for the year ending December 31, 1923.
FIRE ALARM SYSTEM .- Four hundred and fifty one inspec- tions of box movements was made making the necessary adjust- ments.
Eight miles of old wire was replaced with new weatherproof wire.
Seventy-four four pin cross arms was replaced.
Two-hundred and thirty-one two pin arms was replaced.
All boxes was painted two coats of fire alarm red.
On September 14, the contract was signed by His Honor the Mayor for the pulling in of the City Wires underground. The work was started Sept 28, at the present time we are all ready and waiting for the cable.
POLICE SIGNAL SYSTEM .- Three-hundred and four inspec- tions of Police box movements was made installing three new finger springs and telephone batteries.
Three miles of copper wire was pulled in on the Red lights to replace old iron wire.
One-hundred and six four pin arms was replaced and five hundred feet of tree moulding was installed.
INSPECTION OF WIRES .- Fifteen-hundred and fifty-one re- quest for inspections was received making a total of twenty-eight hundred and five inspections, issuing One thousand and nine permits to the Malden Electric Company allowing current to be turned on.
RECOMMENDATIONS .- That a Fire Alarm box be installed on every school building.
That a air whistle be installed at Fire Headquarters.
That the City Wire on Main Street from Porter Street to the Wakefield line be pulled in underground.
