place. Heavy fines were imposed on any one sheltering a stranger without first giving bonds to insure the town against loss, and all were forbidden to lease or sell their property to such without first offering it to the Town. Their neighbors must have been of doubtful quality. Their houses were thatched with the shore grass, which was carefully preserved. The highways were made and kept by the personal labor of the men.

1650. Until this time town business was transacted at meetings called at irregular times, on muster days or any public occasion, but now the first Monday of March and the last Monday of November were fixed upon as regular town meeting days, and everyone tardy was to pay a fine of six pence per hour. First regular town meeting was held November 26, 1651, and the term selectmen was substituted for townsmen. Town business was started in very much the same routine as is followed at present. Deacon John Rogers was first town clerk "recorder" ; Thomas Dyer, first recorder of births and marriages, and William Torrey, first recorder of deeds.

1663. Another and more complete Doomsday book was compiled. February 12, several houses were burned by the Indians.

1675, June 24th. The memorable King Philip's war begun by an attack on Swansey, and during the two years of horror which followed, Weymouth bore her full share of the labor, trial and loss.

1683, November 26. Voting by ballot was introduced into town business.

1685, December. Sir Edmund Andros arrived as governor. He sought to centralize the government of the colonies, and thus interfered with the freedom in local matters enjoyed by the several towns. A storm of opposition and excitement was raised, which ended only with the deposition of Gov. Andros and the restoration of the old order of things.

1690. Capt. Ephraim Hunt received from the General Court a grant of the territory now Ashland.

1697. John Torrey was given the use of twelve poles of land for a tan yard, "to encourage his trade."

1712, June 13. Weymouth instructed its selectmen to prosecute the selectmen of Braintree for neglecting to run the town line. This order has not yet brought the desired result.

1722. The people of South Weymouth petitioned the General Court to be set off as a separate precinct. This was granted in 1723.

1724-5. Means were taken at the March meeting to compel mill owners to build ways for the alewives to reach Whitman's pond. The fish question was an im- portant one for many years.

CANOPY OVER FOREFATHER'S ROCK AT PLYMOUTH.

1729, July 21. Jurymen were first chosen by the town. The highways were still made and kept by the labor of the inhabitants. The larger part of the tax being required for the support of the minister and the schools.

1736-7. Steps were taken to unite with Braintree to build a bridge over Smelt Brook, at Weymouth Landing.

1751. The first general appropriation was made for the poor. The epidemic known as the "throat distemper" carried off within a year about one eighth of the popula- tion. The first church was also burned this year. Soon

after this Weymouth was called upon to bear with the rest of Colonial towns the hardships and expense of the French and Indian wars, which continued until the French laid down their claim as rulers at the fall of Quebec.

1775, and for several years preceeding and following local affairs were thrown entirely into the shade by the stirring events of the Revolutionary war, in which Wey- mouth took and held a foremost place. The recovery from the effects of the war was slow.

1779. A workhouse was built near Tirrell's mill, which was used until 1809.

1805. A turnpike was built from Boston to Plymouth, through Weymouth. This and the building of shoe and other manufactories were the first steps toward the present leading place.

1804. The first postoffice was established at Wey- mouth Landing.

1812-15. War with England again set aflame the patriotic spirit of the people.

1824. Gen. W. H. Sumner and others tried to buy mill privileges on Back River, but the town steadily re- fused.

1843. The town officers were voted pay for the first time.

1852. The present town hall was built on its present site, Washington, cor. Middle streets.

1861. The War of the Rebellion was begun, and con- tinued to absorb the attention of the town until its close. Weymouth citizens as ever distinguishing themselves by an enthusiastic performance of all duties.

1866-79. A final attempt was made to divide the town, but after careful consideration was decided in the negative. Soldiers' monument erected on Burial Hill, North Weymouth.

1870. Town divided into five wards.

1874. Weymouth celebrated the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of her settlement.

1883. The town votes to provide itself with water.

tended almost indefinitely, but the reader is referred to the "Historical Sketch of Weymouth," by Deacon Gil- bert Nash. The writer is largely indebted to that source for the above notes.

1888. Weymouth is a representative town of Massa- chusetts, the most characteristic State of New England. It is well supplied with good churches and schools, and has an intelligent and order-loving people. It offers many advantages to those seeking business locations ; and to those seeking homes, its pleasant and healthy situation, wide shady streets, beautiful river and harbor views present a rare combination of attractions.

The merchants in every department of trade are enter- prising and progressive. They show unusually large stocks and quote prices that compare most favorably with those of the larger business centres. (See index to advertisers. )

The town is well supplied with weekly newspapers, the publishers of which spare no pains to make and keep them models of their class.

The water supply is pure and abundant. The stranger sees in the many public and private buildings in process of erection, signs of a steady and healthy growth, which we trust will ever belong to the pleasant town of Wey- mouth. J. H. H.
