Sargent, Stephen Puffer, Benjamin Jones, John A. Adams and La Roy Sunderland preached here from time to time. The society erected a new church building on a lot in the rear of Water Street; this house was enlarged in 1850, and was destroyed by fire December 13, 1851. Another building was erected upon the same site in 1852; dedicated October 12, 1852; this house

Weymouth.
An attempt to establish a Baptist Church in Weymouth was made as early as the year 1639, but the promoters met with fines and banishment at the hands of the Puritan Standing Order, and gave up their purpose. Over two hundred years later, on February 7, 1854, the present church was formed. For twelve years worship was held in a chapel. The present house, a neat and commodious structure, facing Lincoln Square, was dedi- cated February 1, 1866. The membership of the church is 159.

THE PILGRIM CHURCH OF NORTH WEYMOUTH.
About June, 1851, an ecclesiastical society was formed in North Weymouth. During the ten months ensuing this society built a neat house of worship and dedicated it March 11, 1852. On the same day, March 11, 1852, the Pilgrim Church was organized with fifty-one members. Of these all brought letters from The First Church of Weymouth. On the following Sabbath, March 14, 1852,

the first on which the meeting-house was opened for worship, Rev. Calvin Terry occupied the pulpit, and after three or four Sabbaths, received a call to become its pastor. May 18, 1852, he was installed pastor. At this time David Pratt and James Torrey were deacons. Mr. Terry's ministry terminated April 1, 1857, and Rev. Samuel Rockwood was installed pastor March 2, 1858. Mr. Rockwood was dismissed December 6, 1871, and on the same day Rev. Louis B. Voorhees was ordained and installed. His ministry was signalized by a revival of singular power and great breadth.
