INSTRUCTIONS TO KEY-HOLDERS.


Upon the discovery of fire, go to the nearest box, open the same and pull the hook down once only, then let go; listen, if gong in the box strikes; if not, pull again. If you fail the second time, go to the nearest box and do the same.


Remain at the box, if possible, after giving an alarm, to direct the firemen to the fire. Do not give an alarm for a fire seen at a distance.


Be sure the box is closed before leaving it.


If you remove from your house or place of business, return the key to Chief Engineer.


Key-holders will bear in mind that their key will be "trapped " when used, and will be returned to them by an engineer.


Citizens are earnestly requested to keep themselves informed as to the location of keys to signal boxes. Signs over each box will give the desired information.


SIGNALS.


I-One blow for test at 6.50 a. m., and 8.50 p. m.


I-One blow for time signal at 12 m.


II-Two blows dismiss companies in waiting and give notice that companies in service have "made up."


Should an alarm occur from another box before the signal is given, companies answering second will answer on first, and com- panies answering third will answer on second.


If companies responding to boxes 35, 36, 37 and 45 on second and third alarms are wanted without apparatus, one round of the box will follow.


III-Three blows-second alarm.


III-III-Three blows twice-third alarm.


II-II-II-II-II-II-Twenty-two struck three times at 7.30 a. m. indicates no session of schools in the morning; the same signal at 1.05 p. m. indicates no afternoon session.
