REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE OLD GRAVEYARD.

The committee chosen at the last annual town meeting to carry out the order of the County Commissioners in relation to the widening of Central Street, and to make the improvements upon the Old Graveyard authorized by Chapter 116 of the Act. of 1886, have attended to their duty, and submit the following

REPORT :

The work of widening Central Street and improving the Old Graveyard was commenced in May and completed in June, 1887.

The work of removing the remains of all persons known to have been buried in that part of said graveyard taken for the widening of the street, was first undertaken.

Williams Latham, Esq., published his unique and most valu- able work, entitled, "Epitaphs in Old Bridgewater," in 1882. This book contains a diagram of the Old Graveyard, in which every known grave is numbered.

The committee deemed it wise to adopt the numbers of the graves as given by Mr. Latham, and to preserve a complete record of the changes made in the location of any graves re- moved, showing their new location, so that they may be readily found by the aid of said book and said record. We hereunder give that record, hoping that it may be printed with other town reports, and recorded in full in the record books of the town, that the memory of these things may be preserved to future generations.

The monument of Alice Stetson, daughter of Abisha Stetson, was unearthed in excavating, and erected next west of No. 20. She died Feb. 28, 1815, age 16 mos.

The monument of Thomas Otis, who died Feb. 9, 1797, was also excavated and given a place next east of Hannah Otis, No. 91. Both these stones were manifestly out of place.

No. 5 was a foot-stone to No. 4. No. 6 a foot-stone to No. 241. No. 7 foot-stone to 242. No. 8 a foot-stone to 243. No. 18 a foot-stone of No. 16. These foot-stones were all re-erected, with the monuments to which they respectively belong.

All the graves from 41 to 72 on the front line were moved back slightly, or lowered, as the improvement required, but they remain in the same order as before.

All unknown graves, of which there were a few without mon- uments, on the front line, were carefully removed, and given as nearly as possible the same relative position which they had before the improvement. They are, however, undistinguished, and must forever remain so.

Your committee have taken the utmost pains to carefully preserve the remains of the persons buried within the space re- quired for, or disturbed by, said widening, and all monuments which stood there or were found in the progress of the work.

It was found that by using the material of the old wall, and laying it in cement, a very substantial or durable wall could be made, and one which would be more in keeping with the char- acter of the old graveyard itself, than a wall constructed of new, and even much more costly, material would be. The re- sult was that we were able to make the removals, re-erect the wall, and add a substantial curbstone and well paved gutter on the whole length of the line, and yet but slightly exceed the appropriation.

The improvement is one which we think ought to meet uni- versal approval.

We here append a detailed statement of the money expended in the improvement :-
