THE ALDEN OR VERNON STREET
GRAVE-YARD, - IN - - TITICUT
This yard is the oldest in Bridgewater outside of the old grave- yard near the Unitarian church. It is in the north corner of Cross and Vernon streets, contains one-half acre, all enclosed with a common balance wall, having an entrance for carriages on Vernon street, and another on Cross street, with a drive-way from one to the other, as seen on the plan, which encloses the old part of this burying-ground, which was first buried upon, and now has many unmarked graves, and is much grown over to low bushes and wild grass, and needs the hand of improvement. The oldest grave-stone in this yard is that of Ezekiel, son of Jesse Leach (No. 38), died May 6, 1751, aged 7: The next oldest are Zebedee Leach, 1754, aged 5; William Hooper, 1755, aged 53 ; and Lois Hooper, 1756, aged 49. Only eight grave-stones in the whole yard previous to 1800. In 1850, 155 graves could be distinctly seen and counted.
This ground being part of the old Samuel Alden farm, late Zeph- aniah Fobes, farm, was probably given by said Samuel Alden, who was a son of Dea. Joseph Alden, and lived north of Cross street, and east of this yard, and died 1785, aged 80. It was formerly called the Al- den grave yard, in Titicut.
It is also claimed to have been given by Joshua Fobes, a son of Dea. Edward Fobes, said Joshua being the first white man settler in Titicut, and lived where the late Robert and Bela Fobes lived, and died 1767, aged 78. He dug his well with a wooden shovel in one day. At this time there was no house south of him, and only one house between his house and West Bridgewater, where his father lived. His daughter, Bethia, born 1712, was the first white child born in Titi-

BRIDGEWATER,
cut. This house between his and West Bridgewater was that of Sam - uel Keith, son of Rev. James Keith, and stood where the late Nathan Bassett lived, and on the old Taunton road, as laid out 1668, which came from Mile Brook bridge, in line of North street, to Four Mile brook, sometimes called Tweed brook, crossing the road between the house of Florentius Wilbur and the Ebenezer Gay house, and thence over the high land at Elijah Alden's to Cromwell C. Wilbur's house ; thence up the hill, by Barak Wilbur, to Taunton, through the Gushee neighborhood. Said well and house of Joshua Fobes stood on the east side of the road to Titicut, after leaving the Taunton road at Cromwell C. Wilbur's house.
These persons, Alden and Fobes, were probably both buried in this yard, but their graves are unknown.
There is no deed or paper writing known to exist relating to the origin or title of this burial-ground.
EPITAPHS - - IN- ALDEN, OR VERNON, STREET GRAVE-YARD,
TITICUT
I. Father. Elijah Alden, born Jan. 17, 1800, died Oct. 8, 1879.
In my father's house are many mansions. Husband and father thou hast gone to thy rest ;
We moan thy departure ; But the Lord knoweth best.
A short illness was hoped for ; God granted thy request, and called thee home to the land of the blessed.
2. Mother. Hannah B., wife of Elijah Alden, born Apr. 10, 1809, died June 15, 1880.
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.
Dear the mother we hoped might be more,
But too strong the attachment for thy mother, Who had just gone before.
God bless thee with children who remain here to weep,
Yet they know their work is ended, And in Jesus fallen asleep.
3. Harriet Bassett, daughter of Elijah and Hannah Alden, born April 14, 1845, died Dec 1, 1857.
She has gone to heaven before us.
4. In deeds, not words; in thoughts, not breaths.
Daniel L. Hayward, born Dec. 5, 1804, died May 12, 1871.
The righteous shall shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their father.
5. Hannah Mariah, daughter of Daniel and Hannah Hayward, born Dec. 9, 1837, died Dec. 9, 1873.
Gone home, gone home, her ernest, active spirit, Her very playfulness, her heart of love, The heavenly mansion now she doth inherit, Which Christ made ready ere she went above.
