HEARTBREAK HILL-One mile from town on Argilla Rd. Made famous by Celia Thaxter's poem.

* "Briefly the legend relates the romantic story of an Indian maiden who fell in love with a white sailor, and upon his sailing for a di tant land, she used to climb this hill and pass her days sitting upon the summit watching for his return . . . but he never came back; and still the deserted one watched and waited until she pined away, and at length died of a broken heart . . . the hill has beeome a monument to faithful affection and as such is the favorite resort of lovers in all the country round."

"He never came back! Yet faithful still, She watched from the hill-top her life away. And the townsfolk christened it Heartbreak Hill And it bears the name to this very day." CELIA THANTER

Towy HILL, which rises abruptly back of High Street is also an historic landmark. From its top a superb view ean be obtained, not only of the surrounding country and the harbor of Ipswich but of the long broken New England coast line ;- on a elear day the Isle of Shoals and Mount Agamen- ticus in York, Maine, can be seen. Looking towards the sea the salt grass meadows below end with the harbor which is closed in by

LITTLE NECK, whose bold eminence rises like an island before one. Covered with tiny cottages it is now a pleasant sea-side resort. To reach it by automobile one follows East St. to Eagle Hill and continues over Great Neck Rd. Motor boats leave wharf at Lower East St.

It was formerly the eerter of the Ipswich fishing industry. From the beginning fishing was one of the chief sources of revenue to the settlers. As early as 1611 the town appointed a committee to "dispose of Little Neck for advancing of the Fishery". In 1707, a certain Mr. Higginson writing about whale-boats and their erews at Ipswich remarks, "We should be in readi- ness for the noble sport." Trading ships also eame into the harbor; these vessels plied between the West Indies and the New England seaport towns offering a market for fish and inland produce and brought the settlers in re- turn, sugar, molasses and rum. "The wharves and storehouses and fi hin? establi. hme ts at . . . Little Neck . . . were busy hives of industry and many Ipswich lads took to the sea as sailors or fishermen."

No longer do great ships find shelter here, and the fishing industry has d'appeared: the harbor, however, remains and the winding river still lures to the blue, blue sea. One of her poets has sung:

Elm shadowed Ipswich, kissed by the sea, Meadow, and river, and rocks bold and free, How shall we cherish the memory of thee,

Beautiful Ipswich, kissed by the sea.
