JACOB MEYER MASTER
Jacob Meyer Master died May 1, 1957, at Brooklyn, New York. He was born July 25, 1904, in New York City, the son of Isaac Israel and Fania (Hendler) Master. He prepared at Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, Connecticut, and received an A.B., cum laude, in 1925, and an A.M. in 1927 at Harvard. He was U.S. Probation and Parole Officer in the Southern District of New York and had spent his entire career in social work. He had previously been pro- bation officer and supervisor of the Complaint Division, Juvenile Court of the District of Columbia, and editorial assistant on the Attorney General's survey in Washington. He had written several articles on the probation system and was a member of the American Society of Public Administration.
He was survived by his wife, the former Ethel Frances Kaufman, whom he married in 1929, and two children: Alan Harold and Eva Louise.

ALFRED ARTHUR MEADOWS
Alfred Arthur Meadows died January 12, 1958, at Palm Harbor, Florida. The son of Harry Hull and Annie Esther ( Paine ) Meadows, he was born December 8, 1902, at Ocala, Florida. He attended Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, before coming to Harvard where he received an S.B. in 1925. He was a retired school teacher and grove owner and had taught printing and journalism at Clear- water High School, Clearwater, Florida, for twenty-eight years. He was survived by his wife, the former Mary Ellen Floding, whom he married in 1929, and two sons, Jack Alfred and Richard Arthur.
ALFRED THADDEUS MERIAN
Alfred Thaddeus Merian died August 17, 1958, at Wayne, Maine. He was born March 6, 1903, at Leysin, Switzerland, the son of Alfred Walter and Annie ( Hyatt) Merian. He prepared at Collège Cantonal, Aubonne, Switzerland, and Williston Academy and re- ceived an A.B. at Harvard with our Class. After graduation he spent two years at the School of Architecture and then worked as an architect in New York, Philadelphia and Maine. In 1934 he went on active duty with the U.S. Army in the Field Artillery (Reserves) as a first lieutenant in several Civilian Conservation Corps camps in Pennsylvania and upstate New York. After the war he entered the financial field in Wall Street and since 1949 had his own office on Broadway in New York City.
During 1949-50, he was chairman of the Second Congregational District, Maine Republican Finance Committee. He was a member of Asylum Lodge and the Grange in Wayne, the Harvard Club of Boston, and in New York the Military-Naval Club, Architectural League, Downtown Harvard Lunch Club, Swiss Society, University Glee Club, and Union League and the Abbaye de l'Arc in Lau- sanne.
In 1940 he married Ethel Ruth Margaret Kerr-Baulch.
RALPH GEORGE MILLER
Ralph George Miller died April 8, 1959, at Charlottesville, Vir- ginia. The son of Ralph Eugene and Mildred (Garette) Miller, he was born October 6, 1903, in New York City. He prepared at

the Browning School in New York City and received an A.B. at Harvard with our Class. In 1928 he entered the U.S. Foreign Service and served in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, London, Havana, Mombassa, Cairo and New Brunswick. He was with the Foreign Institute in Washington, D.C., when he retired in 1953. He was secretary of the Charlottesville Unit of Recording for the Blind, Inc., a charity which he and his wife had organized.
In 1929 he married Celeste Crosby. He was survived by his second wife, the former Marie Therese von Degenfeld, whom he married in 1932, a son, Ralph A., and a daughter, Mrs. Al Paul Lefton, Jr.
FRANCIS LAWRENCE ANTHONY NOWAK
Francis Lawrence Anthony Nowak died July 9, 1956, at Fort Pierce, Florida. The son of Felix Edward and Veronica (Kac- marska ) Nowak, he was born May 17, 1901, at Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. He prepared at the local high school and spent three years with our Class. Since leaving college he had worked in the fields of real estate and mercantile business. At the time of our Thirtieth Anniversary Report he was working in the Information and Education Division of the Florida State Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission.
In 1924 he married Vannie Isadel Murray from whom he was later divorced. In 1948 he married Phyllis Gilchrist Wood. Nowak's brother, Stanley John Gregory Nowak, is a member of Harvard '23.
GEORGE RUSSELL PAUL
George Russell Paul died October 10, 1956, at Marshfield, Massa- chusetts. He was born June 12, 1901, at North Adams, Massachu- setts, the son of Willis George and Mabel ( Bulford) Paul. He pre- pared at North Adams High School, spent a year with our Class and a year at the School of Architecture. After leaving Harvard, he worked for several architectural firms in Boston and New York and since 1929 had had his own practice in Abington. His work (non- written material) was published in all American magazines deal- ing with residential architecture.
His marriage to Ethel Kinsman ended in divorce. They had two children: Russell Kinsman and Sally Ann. In 1942 he married Grace Stewart who survived him,

ERIC SANDQUIST
Eric Sandquist died April 21, 1955, at Dedham, Massachusetts. He was born October 26, 1902, in Concord, New Hampshire, the son of Martin and Charlotte Susan (Lennartson) Sandquist. He prepared at Concord High School and received an A.B. in 1928, as of our Class. He was treasurer of the Financial Publishing Com- pany in Boston, a company with which he had been associated since leaving college. He was a member of A. F. & A. M.
He was survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Petterson, whom he married in 1932, and a son, Eric Lawrence.
ROSCOE HALL SAWYER
Roscoe Hall Sawyer died April 6, 1956, at Louisville, Kentucky. He was born August 5, 1903, in Gray, Maine, the son of Fernald David and Susie Agnes (Hall) Sawyer. He prepared at Pennell Institute in Gray, and received an S.B., cum laude, in 1925, and an A.M. in 1927, at Harvard. After a year as an instructor in chemistry at Harvard and two years at Bates College, he joined the duPont Company, where he was research supervisor of new product de- velopment and sales service. He worked successively in Newark, New Jersey, Wilmington, Delaware, Baltimore and back to Wil- mington. While with duPont, he became an expert on pigment physics and was the author of several books on the subject. At the time of our Twenty-fifth Anniversary Report, he was assistant chemical director for Devoe & Reynolds Company in Louisville
He had served as chairman of sub-committee of A.S.T.M .; sec- retary, Baltimore Paint and Varnish Production Club; president, duPont Aero Club and vice-president of Louisville Paint and Var- nish Production Club; president, duPont Aero Club and vice-presi- dent of Louisville Paint and Varnish Production Club. He was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma, American Chemical Society, American Society for Testing Materials and Chemists Club, New York.
He was survived by his wife, the former Priscilla Paradis, whom he married in 1931.
BERNARD SOMAN
Bernard Soman died November 5, 1959, in New York City. The son of Abraham and Ethel (Rosenthal) Soman, he was born April

10, 1906, at Passaic, New Jersey. He attended Brooklyn Boys' High School, New York, before coming to Harvard where he received an A.B., summa cum laude, in 1925, and an LL.B., magna cum laude, in 1929. He was awarded a Henry Russell Shaw Traveling Fellow- ship and spent a year traveling in Europe before entering the Law School.
An attorney, specializing in tax law, he was a member of the law firm of Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler in New York City, with whom he had been associated since 1948. He had form- erly been a member of the law firm of Cook, Lehman & Loeb.
He was survived by his wife, the former Florence Jane Blum- berg, whom he married in 1937.
BERNARD ALBERT STERN
Bernard Albert Stern died January 3, 1958, in New York City, where he was born March 29, 1903, the son of Albert and Amy (Seasongood) Stern. He prepared at the Hackley School and spent two years with our Class. He was a partner in the investment firm of Stern, Lauer & Company and was a former member of the New York Stock Exchange. He was a director of the Planning Board of Somers, New York, and of the Loeb Memorial Home for Con- valescents at Elmsford, New York.
He was survived by his wife, the former Caroline Augusta Ritten- berg, whom he married in 1930, and a son, Bernard Albert, Jr.
CHARLES WARREN STIGER, JR.
Charles Warren Stiger, Jr., died September 14, 1957, at Elk- horn, Wisconsin. He was born October 24, 1901, at Chicago, the son of Charles Warren and Louise M. (Rathbone) Stiger. He pre- pared at Chicago Latin School and Phillips Exeter Academy and spent two years with our Class. He was founder and president of the Stiger Precision Products Company in Chicago. After col- lege he was associated with his father in the Stromberg Motor De- vices Company for several years and then entered the financial field with the Harris Trust and Savings Bank in Chicago. He founded the Stiger Precision Products Company in 1940.
He was one of the founders of the Oak Brook Polo Club in Hinsdale, a member of the Union League Club of Chicago and a

former member of Oak Park Country Club. He served on the board of directors of Holiday Home in Lake Geneva and was a di- rector of the Geneva Lake Civic Association and the Cicero Manu- facturers Association. He was also a member of the Lake Geneva Yacht Club, Lake Geneva Country Club and the First Congrega- tional Church of Oak Park.
In 1924 he married Verna Mary Ross and they had two children: Cynthia Ross and Judith Skiff. In 1940 he married Martha Dela- plaine who survived him.
JOSEPH SMITH SYLVESTER, JR.
Joseph Smith Sylvester, Jr., died July 12, 1958, in Hanover, Massachusetts, where he was born January 19, 1903, the son of Joseph Smith and Mary Ainsworth (Lyman) Sylvester. He at- tended the Pomfret School before coming to Harvard where he received an A.B. in 1926, as of our Class. After college he spent a short time in the financial field.
A lifelong resident of Hanover, he was a manufacturer of ma- chine parts and operator of a glass decorating company until his retirement in 1954, because of ill health. He was president and treasurer of Industrial Machine Works, Inc., treasurer of the Syl- Fay Art Glass Company and president of Deco-Cut Glassware, Inc. He was also director of the Rockland Trust Company and a mem- ber of the Masonic Order.
His marriage to Mildred L. Black ended in divorce. In 1935 he married Elizabeth R. Eaton, who survived him.
JOSSELYN VAN TYNE
Josselyn Van Tyne died January 30, 1957, at Ann Arbor, Michi- gan. The son of Claude Halstead and Isabel (Joslyn) Van Tyne, he was born May 11, 1902, in Philadelphia. He prepared at Culver Military Academy and graduated with our Class. In 1928 he re- ceived a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan and joined its faculty as assistant curator of birds in the Museum of Zoology. Since that time he had held the positions of assistant professor, associate professor and in 1954 received full professorship. He had been curator of birds at the Museum of Zoology since 1931.

In 1954 he made an expedition to the north end of Baffin Island and also served as president of the Ecology Section, International Ornithological Congress in Basel, Switzerland. From 1950 to 1953 he was president of the American Ornithologists' Union. He was a member of the University of Michigan Research Club, British Ornithologists' Club, Cranbrook Institute of Science (trustee) and the International Ornithological Congresses Committee. He was editor of The Wilson Bulletin from 1939 to 1948 and had published various technical papers on ornithology.
He was survived by his wife, the former Helen Belfield Bates, whom he married in 1933. Van Tyne's brother, Claude Halstead Van Tyne, Jr., is a member of Harvard '29.
TRAVIS HARVARD WHITNEY, JR.
Travis Harvard Whitney, Jr., died April 27, 1955, at Brooklyn, New York. The son of Travis Harvard Whitney, '00, and Rosalie (Loew) Whitney, he was born January 29, 1905, in New York City. He prepared at Brooklyn Friends School and received an A.B. at Harvard in 1925, and an LL.B. at Columbia University in 1929. He was a partner in the corporation law firm of Whitman, Ransom & Coulson, and an authority on labor and tax law. He served as coun- sel and adviser to a number of utility and industrial companies and was a former chairman of the New York State Conference on Un- employment Insurance.
He had been active in Brooklyn civic affairs for a number of years and was a member of the board of governors of the Brooklyn Heights Association, trustee of the Citizens Expenditure Survey, Inc., member of the advisory committee of the Willoughby House Settlement, Inc., trustee of Greenwood Cemetery and a member of the Municipal Club of Brooklyn and the 10th Assembly District Republican Club. Other memberships included: Bankers Club of America, Harvard Club of New York, Manhattan Club and the Old Town Country Club of Newbury.
He married Doris Pinkham (now Mrs. Allan G. Richtmyer) in 1930 and they had three children: Joan (Mrs. Harry R. Weichert), Doris (Mrs. Stephen T. Twaddell) and Mary-Jane (Mrs. John L. Sprague). Whitney was survived by his wife, children and a brother, William Thomas Whitney, '31.

LEONARD MARCUS WOLPER
Leonard Marcus Wolper died September 22, 1957, at Bermuda. He was born February 20, 1904, in Boston, the son of Isaac and Nettie (Wolfe) Wolper. He prepared at Athol (Mass.) High School and graduated with our Class. He attended the Law School for three years and, after practising law for three months, went into the merchandising field with Saks 34th Street and Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. Since 1929 he had been associated with Sears, Roe- buck & Company. After a few years spent traveling over the coun- try as a trouble shooter, he was appointed manager of one of Sears' larger retail units in Camden, New Jersey, and since 1949 had been group general manager for the company at Rochester, New York. During World War II he served as a major in the Air Force.
He was a noted sportsman and after-dinner speaker. While on a trip to Bermuda he was drowned in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue another bather.
In 1939 he married Elizabeth C. Campbell from whom he was divorced in 1952.
JOHN RUSSELL WOOD
John Russell Wood died March 7, 1960, at Easton, Pennsylvania. The son of John William Wood, '98, and Alice Minot (Russell) Wood, he was born January 27, 1904, at Cambridge, Massachusetts. He attended Rindge Technical School in Cambridge before com- ing to Harvard where he received an S.B. in 1925, and an M.B.A. in 1928.
In 1930 he became associated with Lever Brothers Company, working successively in their advertising department in Boston, as sales supervisor in Canada, and as assistant field manager in New York City, a position he held at the time of our Twenty-fifth Anni- versary Report.
In 1937 he married Dorothy M. Cochrane who, with their two children, Janice Russell and John Cochrane, survived him.
On February 3d, Wood sent in his questionnaire for this Report, saying that he was sales manager of household paper products for the Dixie Cup Division of American Can Company.

JAMES HENDON WRIGHT
James Hendon Wright died December 8, 1957, at Chicago, Illi- nois. The son of James Harry and Elizabeth (Post) Wright, he was born January 3, 1902, at Neenah, Wisconsin. He prepared at Kalamazoo (Mich.) High School and spent four years at Harvard with our Class. After leaving college he joined the advertising agency of Barton, Durstine & Osborn in New York, which later be- came Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn, Inc., of which he was vice-president and in charge of their Chicago office. Later he was an account executive for Lord & Thomas in New York, and head of the radio department of H. W. Kastor & Sons, Chicago advertising agency, and Kastor, Farrell, Chesley & Clifford, Inc., in both New York and Los Angeles.
His marriage to the former Gladys Peters ended in divorce. He was survived by his second wife, the former Ruth Stroth, and a son, James H., Jr.
