CEDRIC MUNROE HASTINGS: Merchandise Manager. Home Address, 45 Oaks Rd., Framingham, Mass. Office Address, Dennison Manufacturing Co., Framingham, Mass. Married, Virginia Frances Rice, June 22, 1929, Framingham, Mass. Children, Dana Munroe, Harvard '53, M.B.A. '55, May 28, 1931 (m. Muriel Alice Grant); Alyce Berenice, May 27, 1935 (m. Richard Crosby Rogers, Harvard '56). Grandchild, Allison Page Rogers, Dec. 28, 1958.

Marriage of our two children in 1956 and arrival of our first grandchild in December, 1958, were the highlights of our life these past five years. Summer months since 1941 have been spent in West Falmouth, Mass. The remainder of the year we continue our inter- ests in local Framingham affairs. Merchandising work on the gummed and coated paper division matters for Dennison takes me away from home frequently, while Jinny keeps herself on the go with club and hospital activities. My singing interests continue; I am associate conductor of the Community Choral Society of Framingham, whose founder and conductor, Dr. Edward F. Gilday, has recently been made conductor of the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston.

My son-in-law, Richard Rogers, is a member of the Harvard Medical School class of 1960.

In May, 1959, we moved from a small apartment near Harvard Square to half a house where we are enjoying more than twice as much space, a garage, and a chance to dig in the dirt. It is like suburban living in the city, with easy commuting.

As our business expands, more and more of my time is spent traveling in Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Scandinavia. Our firm was already active in mineral exploration in Africa and South America, but since it became mineral adviser to the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons of Venezuela, and the Danish Academy of Sciences in 1958, my wife and I never know where we shall be

next. Fortunately, we consider travel fun, and sometimes manage to sneak in three or four weeks of vacation, usually in Europe or Africa.

During 1955 and 1956, was secretary of the Mining and Metal- lurgical Society of America, and continue to be a director of our two consulting companies. As to hobbies, colored photography, fishing, shooting and boating continue to be my favorites, but I never get time for any of them.

ARNOLD DAVID HOFFMAN: President, Mesabi Iron Company. Home Address, 101 Central Park West, New York, N.Y .; Cavendish, Vt. Office Address, 452 Fifth Ave., New York 18, N.Y. Married, Patricia A. McGreevy, Nov. 5, 1948, Fort Lee, N.J. Children, Michael Arnold, Aug. 15, 1949; Jacqueline Ann, Jan. 9, 1954.

In the last five years, my work has been almost exclusively in iron ore. In 1956 I became president of Quebec Cobalt & Explora- tion, Ltd., a company which discovered large low-grade iron deposits in the Quebec-Labrador area of Canada. With a proved and indicated ore reserve in the order of a billion tons, we succeeded in obtaining the interest of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, and after a two-year period of exploration, this company has leased our property for 100 years. Jones & Laughlin has now been joined by Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company as a partner. In the course of this new association, I became re-acquainted with Howard P. Sharpe, one of our classmates, who is head of Jones and Laughlin's legal department.

The Mesabi Iron Company situation is well known in mining and financial communities. In 1958 I became president after a spirited proxy contest. Mesabi involves the largest low-grade taconite iron ore operation on the Mesabi Iron Range in Minnesota. Mesabi leases were assigned to Reserve Mining Company (Republic and Armco Steel) in 1939 for a consideration of one-third of the net profits. Since production commenced in 1953, litigation has arisen concerning the accounting submitted by Reserve to Mesabi. Be- cause the mine has a life of 100 years at current rates of produc- tion, a staggering amount of money is involved. The battle, there- fore, waxes hot and heavy. To an old bushwacker, contending with two of the largest steel companies in the country is a novel ex- perience. (Curiously, Reserve's legal brain-trust is headed by one of our classmates. ) [Ed. Note: He is W. J. Milde.]

Harvard Class of 1925

In 1955 my brother Robert, '19, and I organized the Robert and Arnold Hoffman Foundation, Inc., principally for the benefit of Harvard University. We established a loan fund and a scholarship, the latter for "C" students. This generated a nationwide round of publicity which I am glad to say has evoked enthusiastic response, with the result that there are now many similar scholarships, not only at Harvard, but at several other universities.

As diversion, I have lately written the book and lyrics of a musical comedy based on my experiences in northern Canada. Whether or not it is produced remains to be seen, but to date, I have enjoyed the stimulation and fun of authorship, as well as meeting and working with the extraordinary people of the "thitter."

I am director and president of Mesabi Iron Company, Quebec Cobalt & Exploration, Ltd., and Towne Mines Corporation, and director of North American Mines, Inc., and Pioneer Fund, Inc.

and as such executive assistant to the eastern production manager. It is more than a full-time job, I assure you, complicated in recent years by the advent of television, with all its various ramifications, and now more recently complicated by the tremendous growth of electronics. However, we are still making pictures and I rather suspect we shall continue to do so no matter what new develop- ments, related and unrelated to the motion picture industry, occur.

JOHN HENRY ISELIN, JR .: Physician. Home Address, 9 Club Way, Hartsdale, N.Y. Office Address, New York Telephone Co., 140 West St., New York, N.Y., and Life Extension Examiners, 11 E. 44th St., New York, N.Y. Married, Lydia Merrill, Feb. 6, 1926, New York, N.Y. (divorced 1941); Harriet Davis Gesner, Jan. 23, 1942, New York, N.Y. Children, Joan Lydia, March 4, 1928 (m. John Hindon Hyde); John Henry, 3d, April 7, 1932 (died April 22, 1952); Alan Davis, July 15, 1943. Grandchildren, John James Hindon Hyde, 1951; Barbara Iselin Hyde, 1954.

My position as assistant to the secretary of the Medical Society of the State of New York, which I enjoyed since 1954, was terminated in April, 1959, when the secretary resigned and the society under- went reorganization. Since then I have been enjoying my work as one of several physicians with the New York Telephone Com- pany every morning. The work is particularly enjoyable, chiefly because of the high calibre of the personnel and because it affords one more outlet for my interest in human beings, who are, in my opinion, the most interesting things in life. My work as an examiner for Life Extension Examiners continues as it has been each after- noon since 1952.

I am still a member of the board of directors of the Hartsdale Community Fund. Since the last Report, I have become a member of the Big Brother-Big Sister Committee of the Family Welfare Service of Westchester County, which helps boys and girls from broken homes and those who may have been in trouble with the law. I still enjoy tennis, squash rackets and swimming, especially in the surf.
