The fact that an alarm box is located near their resi- dence, and where the key is kept, should be known by all persons, both male and female ; and the simple matter of giving an alarm in case of fire should be a matter of common education. The board of Engineers recommend to all persons who may see this notice that they make the necessary inquiries to enable them, in case of need, either to get the key and pull the box, or direct others to do so. Time saved in this way may sometimes save a conflagra- tion.

DIRECTIONS.

Get the key to the nearest box to the fire, open the box, pull the hook down once and let go. After giving the alarm, remain awhile, if possible, by the box to direct the firemen to the fire. Each box contains a small bell, which, if heard before you pull, indicates that the alarm has been previously given. Do not pull a box while an alarm is being sent in from another box. Never open the box or touch the apparatus except in case of fire. Never sound an alarm for a fire seen at a distance. Be reason- ably sure there is a fire before sounding an alarm.

Caution-To persons holding keys : Never let the key go out of your possession except to some responsible per- son to give an alarm.

495

MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT

Any person holding a key who should change his resi- dence, or placc of business, will please return the key to the nearest Fire Station, or to a police officer.

City Hall and Walnut sq. school bells and Jacques' whistle will give number of box thus : Alarm from box 24- bell and whistle will strike and blow twice (- - ), pause, then four times (- - - - ), repeating the same.

SPECIAL SIGNALS.

Test Stroke-At 12.45, Sunday's and Holidays excepted.

Two Strokes-After an alarm indicates that the fire is under control.

Three Strokes, three times-Fire out of town.

Four Strokes, two times-High water signal.

Ten Strokes, two times-Police call.

Twelve Strokes, three times-Military call.

Two Strokes, three times-No school.

NO-SCHOOL SIGNALS.

Two strokes, struck three times at 7.30 a. m., indicates that there will be no forenoon session of the Public Schools ; the same signal struck at 11.15 a. m. or 1.15 p. m. indicates that there will be no school session in the after- noon. When struck at 11.15 the Grammar Schools will continue their session one hour longer than usual. During November, December and January the signal is given at 12.30, instead of 1.15. When struck at 6.15 there will be no session at the Evening School. Fire at all other times. JOHN B. GORDON, Chief Engineer.
