Holyoke Water Power Co.
This company was incorporated in 1859, buying the stock, etc., of the old Hadley Falls Company, which had built the dam, started the canals, and built a large machine-shop and two large cotton-mills. The capital stock of the present company is $600,000. President, George M. Bartholomew, of Hartford. Conn .; agent and treasurer, William A. Chase of Holyoke.
The fall of the river in the rapids is 60 feet.
The gateways, canals, etc., have all been planned on this basis. The main canal at its head and for some distance below is 140 feet wide and 22 feet deep, and the flow of water through the main gate is 6,000 cubic feet per second. This canal is over a mile long, and the difference in height between it and the second level is 20 feet. The second level, considerably over two miles long, 140 feet wide and 15 feet deep, is divided conveniently into two sections. The first, which runs parallel to the upper level and four hundred feet distant from it, makes a race-way for its water, and at its southern end sup- plies power to a few large mills, giving them a head of twelve feet above the level of the third level canal, which starts at that place.
The second section starts from the northern end of the first section and follows the course of the river, keeping about 400 feet from it, and furnishing a head of from 23 to 28 feet to the mills on its banks.
Between the lower ends of these two sections and following the course of the river is the third level canal, which is 100 feet wide and 10 feet deep, and gives a head of from 23 to 28 feet above the river.
A "mill-power " is the right during 16 hours per day to draw from the nearest canal 38 cubic feet of water per second with a head of 20 feet which is equivalent to 89 horse-powers, of which the wheels now in use will save 65 horse powers. The annual rental per mill-power is 260 ounces of silver ($300 has always been accepted in lieu thereof), or $4.62 per horse-power. (The lowest cost ever calculated for steam power is $19.89 a year per horse-power; over four times the cost of water.)
