This department of the city is under the charge of a. Water Board of three members, registrar and superintend- ent; James F. Allyn, chairman; J. A. Sullivan, treasurer; Timothy Merrick, secretary; E. P. Clark, water registrar; John D. Hardy, superintendent. Surveys for the supply of water for the city were commenced in the fall of 1871, and the works were fully com- pleted August 6, 1873. mountain ponds (Ashley and Wright), with their inexhaustable supply rrom a water shed of 1,726 acres (which delivers an average of 2,568,121 gallons into the ponds daily.) forming a flow- age area of 211.8 acres. The ponds are located within the city limits, being 3.59 miles from the City Hall. The carrying capacity of the supply main (constructed of cast iron), standard weight, is 2,666,000 gallons or more in 24 hours. The legislature anthorized the town to issue bonds to the amount of $250,000, which covered the entire cost of construction. In 1881 the brooks known by the names of Riley and Tannery brook, were turned into the main pipe near the Wright pond, and it is estimated that the addition to the water supply is increased nearly, or quite, one-eighth. In 1884 the Commissioners built a dam at the " Whiting Street Brook" and have carried the main pipe to that point. With that addition Holyoke probably has a supply sufficient for double its present population.
