Quarry
The filling of the abandoned Slate Quarry at Apthorp and Marshall Streets and Billings Road.
We advertised for proposals and the bid submitted by the Walter Reed Corporation was accepted.
We constructed a temporary roadway since we could not enter the Quarry through private lands and the contractor completed this work by installing 21,959.5 cubic yards of fill.

REPORT OF COMMISSIONER OF PUBLIC WORKS
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SEWER DIVISION OF THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
January 3, 1944.
MR. JAMES P. DONOVAN,
Commissioner of Public Works, Quincy, Massachusetts.
Dear Sir:
I respectfully submit the report of the Sewer Division of the Public Works Department for the year ending December 31, 1943:
For financial statement, see Auditor's report.

Construction
Eighty-four one hundredths of a mile, or less than the average amount of common sewers, was laid this year. This was due partly to the shortage of help and the character of the work involved. Ledge was encountered in Adele Road, Ashland Street, Bunker Hill Lane and Furnace Brook Parkway. On other extensions, ground water conditions made it necessary to lay underdrains and operate pumps during construction. Cuts deeper than the average, requiring bracing and sheathing, also contributed to the less than average mileage of sewers produced.
A tabulation showing the location, mileage and other particulars is made a part of this report.
Maintenance and Repairs
Inspection, cleaning and flushing was carried on as time would permit and only on those sections that were absolutely necessary.
180
CITY OF QUINCY
Repairs were made to an 18-inch sanitary sewer line on Meadow- brook Road.
The system now comprises 166 miles, about 50 miles of which is over forty years old and requires more attention to keep operating properly. Replacement of a large part of our cleaning equipment must be made to carry on this work for next year.
Storm and Surface Drains
A 60" reinforced concrete pipe was laid in Sachem Brook from Billings Road to Quincy Shore Boulevard. The pipe line was cov- ered and the abutting land rough graded. A channel for the outlet was dredged to low water mark and a tidegate chamber built for the installation of two 60" tidegates to be placed in tandem.
About 600 linear feet of stone masonry side wall five feet high was built on Furnace Brook near the Eventide Home, Adams Street, and a reinforced concrete slab placed at the driveway.
Miscellaneous repairs and replacements were done at the direction of the Commissioner of Public Works.
Very truly yours, WALTER S. MCKENZIE, General Foreman, Sewer Division.

REPORT OF DEPARTMENT OF HISTORICAL PLACES
THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORICAL PLACES
January 18, 1944
HON. CHARLES A. Ross, Mayor, City of Quincy, Massachusetts.
Dear Sir:
The Board of Managers of the Department of Historical Places herewith submits its fourth annual report.
The Board is very much pleased to report that the Birthplaces of our two Presidents are now generally speaking in excellent repair and no major repairs should be necessary for some years.
Quincy is indeed fortunate in owning two of the oldest and most historic houses in our country and it is encouraging to note that slowly but surely they are receiving the respect they deserve.
During the past year both houses have been visited by many notable people from the United States and from Mexico, Cuba, Egypt, England, and Canada.
When traveling restrictions are removed, it seems reasonable to expect that the Birthplaces will register many more visitors.
The Board takes this occasion to acknowledge the support and cooperation given us by the Mayor and members of the City Council.
Respectfully submitted, MAURICE SPILLANE, Chairman, GRACE P. BONSALL, Secretary, HARRIET B. PIERCE, LAWRENCE W. LYONS.
