CITY OF QUINCY

QUINCY WAR PRICE AND RATIONING BOARD NO. 30 ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1943

January 1, 1944

The secretary wishes to submit a report of progress during the year 1943. Many changes have taken place in the organization and in the office itself during the past year. Much new equipment has been obtained and new personnel added.

During the year, the office quarters were enlarged and rear- ranged. A rest room for the girls was constructed, an enclosure was built at the entrance, a burglar alarm was installed, and, to insure additional safety, arrangements were made to store the bulk of the coupons at the Norfolk County Trust Company at an annual rental of $100 a year. Additional telephone service has been installed and a bell system, with signals for each department, supplements the telephone system.

Office supplies obtained from the State have included: 8 desks, 1 swivel chair, 5 typewriters, 16 file cabinets, 2 typewriter tables and 8 desk lamps. The bulk of our office supplies such as en- velopes, blotters, paper, typewriter ribbons, pencils, pens, erasers, etc., formerly supplied by the city, have been furnished during the past year by the State.

To improve the lighting in the office, 20 desk lamps were pur- chased, Of the $4,700.00 allocated by the Defense Council for the Rationing Board expenses, $2,811.75 was expended, leaving a bal- ance of $1,888.25, which was returned. An itemized account of expenditures is attached.

Relative to our Board membership, Mr. Albert L. Lash was ap- pointed chairman to succeed Mr. Perley E. Barbour who resigned. Nine new members were added to the Board. These are:

Loy J. Bowen Elmer Wordell Wilfred R. Rhodes Floyd A. Hayward Herbert C. Claridge U. Russell Paakonen Paul M. LeComte

John P. Flavin

Amelio A. Della Chiesa (resigned)

Eleven new clerks were added to the staff, bringing the num- ber to 24. Miss Deary was appointed to take charge of the gaso- line department upon the resignation of Mrs. Smollett. Mrs. Doyle was appointed head of the food division; Miss Santeusanio, fuel oil head; and Miss Ungar, in charge of shoes, rubber boots and bicycles.

In general, office procedures have been revised in order to pro- mote efficiency and dispatch. A new accounting and receipt sys- tem has made a complete check of coupons possible.

The Mayor, in his annual address, paid tribute to the Rationing Board for the excellent service to the city.

The Secretary wishes to express appreciation to the Board mem- bers and Staff for the cooperation they have given, all of which has resulted in a most successful year.

Signed, ALEXANDER PURDON

Administrative Secretary.
