** Estimate shows decrease due to conditions caused by great textile strike. Note :- Since 1895, with the exception of the official census year, that is, every year divisable by five, the population given is nothing more than an estimate based on the computation of the average annual increases. The figure for 1916 is in accordance with a report given out by the Federal Census Bureau for Massa- chusetts and rating Lawrence as the ninth city in the state.
