Barnstable is the county seat, and contains a court house and county jail. The Plymouth Division of the New York, New Haven & Hart- ford R. R. passes through nearly every town, having its terminus at Provincetown, with branches from Buzzards Bay to Wood's Hole on the southwest, from Yarmouth to Hyannis on the south, and from Harwich to Chatham on the southeast. The agricultural products are

much below those of other counties, owing to the sandy nature of the soil. There are no rivers of importance, but there are many large and beautiful ponds. Scrub oak and yellow pine compose the principal timber growth, extensive tracts of the latter having been planted, so that there are now many thrifty young forests. Sea and shore fisheries, cranberry culture and the entertaining of summer visitors can be said to form the chief occupation of the people. Pop- ulation by U. S. census 1900, 27,826; State cen- sus 1905, 26,831. Area, 444 square miles. Valua- tion 1906, $27,158,050.

County Commissioners - Elected triennially. Compensation $1300, divided. Thos. H. Soule (R) Barnstable, Jan. 1910; Lafayette K. Chase (R) Yarmouth, 1911; George I. Briggs (R) Bourne, 1909. Meetings held at Barnstable on the second Tuesdays of April and October.

Berkshire County was named from Berkshire, England. It occupies the extreme western end of the State, extending from Connecticut on the south to Vermont on the north. The Taconic and Green Mountain ranges extend through the county from north to south, presenting many scenes of wild and picturesque beauty. Grey- lock, in Adams, 3505 feet, the highest elevation in the State, has been set apart as a public reservation.
