Bedford are the county seats, each having a court house, jail, etc. There are three registries of deeds, the Northern District, at Taunton, comprising the towns of Attleboro, Berkley, Dighton, Easton, Mansfield, North Attleboro, Norton, Raynham, Rehoboth, Seekonk and Taunton; the Southern District, at New Bed- ford, the towns of Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fair- haven, New Bedford and Westport; and the Fall River District the towns of Fall River, Freetown, Somerset and Swansea. The Taunton River, with its various tributaries, furnishes many water powers. Manufacturing is the chief in- dustry. Forming the extreme northeastern part of the State, adjoining New Hampshire, this is one of the most thickly settled sections of the Common- wealth. It is traversed by various branches of the Boston & Maine R. R., and by electric street railways from town to town and village to vil- lage. Extensive manufacturing, ocean fisheries, of which Gloucester is the principal seat, and farming are the chief industries. Many popular summer resorts are embraced within the county lines. The Merrimac River furnishes power to the great mills at Lawrence, and the Parker, Ipswich and Bass Rivers are the other principal streams, some of which are navigable to small vessels for short distances. Salem, Lawrence and Newburyport are the county seats, each having a court house, there "being county jails at these, also at Ipswich, and a truant school at Lawrence. The registry of deeds for Northern District is at Lawrence for the towns of Andover, Lawrence, Methuen and North Andover; South- ern District at Newburyport for towns of Ames- bury, Beverly, Boxford, Danvers, Essex, George- town, Gloucester, Groveland, Hamilton, Haver- hill, Ipswich, Lynn, Lynnfield, Manchester, Mar- blehead, Merrimac, Middleton, Nahant, New- bury, Newburyport, Peabody, Rockport, Row- ley, Salem, Salisbury, Saugus, Swampscott. Bounded on the north by Hampshire County, east by Worcester, and on the south by the State of Connecticut, and on the west by Berkshire County. The noble Connecticut River flows about midway through the county from north to south. Into this runs the Westfield River

from the northwest and the Chicopee River from the east. The western and eastern portions are very hilly; the central portion, however, abounds in rich farming land, and here may be found some of the finest farms in the State. The manufacturing establishments are both numer- ous and extensive, and the city of Holyoke has long been known as the seat of the fine paper business of the country. The Boston & Albany Division of the New York Central & Hudson River R. R. traverses the county from east to west, and other portions are served by the Athol branch of the same road, the New York, New Haven & Hartford R. R., the Connecticut & Passumpsic Division of the Boston & Maine R. R. and the Central Vermont R. R. Electric street railway connections have been established between all the larger towns in the county. Springfield is the county seat, and has a fine court house and a house of correction; also a county truant school. Population by U. S. cen- sus 1900, 175,603; State census 1905, 196,013. Area, 629 square miles. Valuation 1906, $171,- 427,539.

Situated between Hampden and Franklin Counties, it is divided into eastern and western sections by the Connecticut River. The rail- roads are the Southern Division and the Con- necticut & Passumpsic Division of the Boston & Maine R. R., the Central Vermont R. R., the


Northampton Division of the New York, New Haven & Hartford R. R., and the Ware River branch and Athol branch of the Boston & Al- bany Div. of the N. Y. C. & H. R. R. R. The western part is mountainous and the whole county of uneven surface. The highest eleva- tions are Moore's Hill in Goshen, 1713 feet; High Ridge in Williamsburg, 1484 feet; Pine Hill in Pelham, 1220 feet; Mount Tom, on the west side of the Connecticut, 1100 feet, and the Mt. Holyoke range on the east side. Along the alluvial basin of the Connecticut the soil is very rich and fertile and is well cultivated. Northampton is the county seat and has a court house and jail. Population by U. S. census 1900, 58,820; State census 1905, 62,227. Area, 594 square miles. Valuation 1906, $36,351,016.
