Since that year, 1885, and until very re- cently, when Mr. Borofsky took up his resi- dence in the nearby town of Brookline, he has resided in the city of Boston, and has made himself a foremost figure in several directions -in the law, in business, and fraternally. For five years, until 1890, he continued to work as a clerk, then for twelve years, until 1902, en- gaged in the real estate business. From 1902 until 1906, he served as chief officer and man- ager of the Pemberton Law Stationery Com-
pany, was a member of the Board of Assessors of Boston, 1906-08, and in the latter year achieved admittance to the Massachusetts bar, for he had read much of law during preceding years. In March, 1908, he entered into the practice of law, and has continued at it with ever-mounting prestige, until the present time (1928), though his interests continue diversi- fied. It is noteworthy that he took up the practice of his profession at the age of forty- three, when the majority of barristers are well established. He is president and treasurer of The Legal Directory Corporation, publishers of The Baggott and Ryall Directory of At- torneys, and has many connections in the world of finance.
In 1898 Mr. Borofsky became a member of the Boston City Council, and served well in- deed as member of that distinguished body. In 1900 and 1901 he was representative to the Massachusetts State Legislature, and as already cited, was principal assessor of the city, 1906- 08. When the United States declared war against Spain, Mr. Borofsky served as captain in the 6th Company of Infantry, 1st Regiment, Massachusetts Provisional Militia, until 1899. During America's participation in the World War he was beyond the age limit for duty in the militia, but was of valued service as a "four-minute" man, and participated in many patriotic campaigns, notably in those of the Red Cross and Liberty Bond Loan.
Fraternally, Mr. Borofsky is a member of the Order of B'nai Brith, and the Independent Order of Brith Abraham. He belongs to the American Bar Association, the Commercial Law League of America, is former president of the Corporation Tifareth Israel, a member of the Boston Chamber of Commerce, and the Boston City Club. His place of worship is Temple Ohabei Shalom (Hebrew), of Brook- line.
Mr. Borofsky married, May 21, 1885, in Bos- ton, Ettie Willensky, daughter of Judah and Shainie (meaning "the beautiful") Willensky; and they have a daughter, Sarah Rebecca, who was born April 19, 1902.

JOHN CHARLES PAPPAS-With the classical antique background of Greece behind him, John Charles Pappas came to America in childhood with his parents, and here is rap- idly making for himself a fine reputation in the profession of law. He is numbered among the city's well-known barristers, takes an active part in movements of interest to good citizens, and is a leader in fraternal matters pertaining to men of Greek antecedents.
The surname Pappas, an ancient one in Greece, is distinguished in its honorable own- ership in the United States. Costas Pappas, father of John Charles Pappas, was born in Greece, and brought his family to the United States, taking residence in Somerville, Massa- chusetts, in 1907. He made his career as an importer of large affairs, and at the present time lives in retirement, at Watertown, aged sixty-eight years (1928). Costas Pappas mar- ried Sophia Flamburas, as himself a native of Greece; and to them were born children, all of whom survive: 1. Thomas A. Belmont. 2. Mary, wife of Peter E. Caracostas, of Water- town. 3. John Charles, of whom further. 4. Arthur. 5. Helen.
John Charles Pappas was born at Philiatra, Greece, July 11, 1903, and was four years of age when his parents established residence in Somerville, Massachusetts. Having come to America at an age so young, his mind plastic for the imprint of American modes of speech and custom, he found little difficulty with the language, and in Somerville High School, whence he graduated, gave evidence of owning a mind of more than average strength. For a year following receipt of the high school dip- loma he attended Boston College, then studied business administration in the Boston Univer- sity School of Business. But the law had taken a firm hold on his inclination, meanwhile, and he transferred from the business school to Bos- ton University School of Law, from which he took the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1925, at the age of twenty-two years. He was admitted to the bar in the year following, and has been in practice, in Boston, with offices at No. 185 Dev-
onshire Street, during the period that has suc- ceeded. His clientele is considerable, and has augmented with the months of practice, which have been of marked distinction to Mr. Pappas as legal practitioner.
Since 1925 Mr. Pappas has been president of the Hellenic Democratic Club of Massachu- setts. He is affiliated with the Free and Ac- cepted Masons, American Ahepa, and Hellen- ic Educational Progressive Association. Dur- ing his residence in Somerville (he now lives at Watertown, No. 122 Belmont Street) he was a member of the Massachusetts National Guard, 101st Engineers. He is a communi- cant of the Greek Orthodox Church, of Bos- ton.
QUINCY ISADORE ABRAMS-Barrister with offices in the Tremont Building, Boston, Quincy Isadore Abrams is a native of this city. He was born on August 23, 1892, a son of Myer Abrams and Fannie (Rosenthal) Abrams. Myer Abrams was born in Russia and came to this country during childhood, unaccompanied by relatives. He made his own way at various jobs, in Boston, and eventually became in- volved in business on a large scale as dealer in horses and cattle. Industrious, intelligent, he has now retired from a long and prosperous career in commerce, and resides in Cambridge. Myer Abrams was united in marriage with Fannie Rosenthal in Boston. She, too, is a na- tive of Russia, and came to the United States when she was a young girl, with her parents, who located in the Massachusetts metrop- olis. Myer and Fannie (Rosenthal) Abrams are the parents of three children, each of whom has attained to maturity and occupies a sub- stantial place in his or her respective communi- ty: 1. Quincy Isadore, of whom further. 2. Sadye Lillian, wife of Harold Schwartz, of Cam- bridge. 3. Ethel, unmarried, of Boston.
Quincy Isadore Abrams attended the Wash-

METROPOLITAN BOSTON
ington Grammar School in Quincy, Massachu- setts, completing the elementary grades in 1905, at the very early age of thirteen years. From Quincy High School he graduated four years later with high scholastic rank, and matriculated in the fall of 1909 in the Boston University, De- partinent of Law. Here he applied himself to studies with the full force of his gifted intellect, and finished with all courses in expeditious time, graduating after three years only, taking his degree as Bachelor of Laws in 1912. The following year he passed the examinations that permitted him to practice the profession of his choice before any bar in the State of Massa- chusetts, and began at once upon his career. His progress was in every way satisfying, and on the date when the United States finally entered the World War, with a declaration of the existence of a state of warfare with Germany, April 6, 1917, he was firmly installed in the profession; but he left it gladly, to enlist in his country's service, enlisting in September of that year. Mr. Abrams was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, and there remained with signal distinction in per- formance of duty, until mustered out, in De- cember, 1918. He was put in charge of Charles- ton station, and was examining officer in charge of distribution of men to three stations. In the handling of these allotments, for naval aviation, his word was final. It was Mr. Abrams who, like others, vastly annoyed at the eternal miscarriage and stoppage of the mails in the 4th Regiment, perfected and installed a system of delivery which solved the problem thence on- ward. This is only one illustration of his initiative as applied to the service of the United States military in war time; there are many others which it would be a pleasure to cite here, but which seems unnecessary. The war behind, Mr. Abrams returned to the practice of law, and resumed the seam of his progress where he had dropped it for martial duty. His offices in the Tremont Building are known to an ever augmented clientele.
Mr. Abrams resides at No. 131 Fuller Street, Brookline, but for a number of years lived
in Quincy, the beautiful little city of his given name. There he was active in politics. A Republican, he has constantly been loyal to the principles of government upheld by the party, and in Quincy was a member of the Republican City Commission. He has, from time to time, performed many offices for the party, and is known in Quincy particularly for the ability of his speeches in its support. In the matter of relaxation Mr. Abrams favors golf, which he plays with some proficiency, and to the occasional misfortune of confreres in the law who are matched against him. In school days he was skilled as player of base- ball and football and hockey, and today is frequently enabled to indulge his pleasure in the last named. He has also participated in several boxing matches, and attained to fair mastery of shooting and riding, having been afforded a wide choice of mounts while his father was still engaged in business with horses. In his religion Mr. Abrams is devout, a mem- ber of Temple Israel, Commonwealth Avenue, Boston; and in matters of charity he is most generous, giving readily, regardless of race or creed or other narrowing consideration, in a manner humanitarian.
Mr. Abrams married, in the Copley-Plaza, June 29, 1920, Rosamond Helise Levy, born in Boston, a daughter of Harry Levy, native of Boston, Massachusetts, later living in Eng- land, then returning to this country, now de- ceased, and Annie (Grishaver) Levy, who is a native of Boston and lives in New York City. Annie (Grishaver) Levy is a member of a famous old Holland family. Mr. and Mrs. Abrams are the parents of two children: Bar- bara Jean, born May 10, 1921; and Helen Ruth, born September 6, 1923.
P. NICHOLAS PETROCELLI-Of variety and interest, the career of P. Nicholas Petrocelli has been unusual, and he is today one of the
264
METROPOLITAN BOSTON
foremost barristers of his generation in the city of Boston.
Born October 24, 1895, in Boston, P. Nicholas Petrocelli is a son of Frank A. and Mary J. (Mazziotta) Petrocelli. His father, born in Italy, July 15, 1864, came to the United States as a young man, and is now engaged at his trade, that of mechanic, in Boston (1928). Mary J. (Mazziotta) Petrocelli also was born in Italy, September 25, 1866, and came to this country with her husband, here to make a new home in a greater land. Of their union were born children, six of whom are living: Mary Louise, wife of Dominick A. Gerardi; Jennie R., wife of Peter V. Bellotti; Philip A., James A., Luke A., and P. Nicholas, of whom further.
In Dearborn Grammar School Mr. Petrocelli secured his elementary academic instruction, completing the course there in 1908. In 1913 he graduated, with markings significant of schol- astic excellence, from Boston Latin School; then matriculated in Boston College, from which he took the degree of Bachelor of Arts, in 1917. Meanwhile, his taste for the law as a life's work had sharpened, and he now entered Harvard Law School, from which he graduated in 1921, with the degree of Bachelor of Laws. He was admitted to the bar of Massachusetts, Septem- ber 23, 1921; United States District Court for Massachusetts, March 11, 1924; United States Circuit Court of Appeals, April 8, 1924, and Uni- ted States Supreme Court, April 25, 1927. Since then he has been actively engaged in a lucrative practice. Honors have come to him. From 1922 to 1926 he was assistant corporation coun- sel for the city of Boston, one of the youngest ever appointed; appeared as counsel in a num- ber of important cases affecting the municipality. He is now a director of and counsel for the Dudley Cooperative Bank, and fraternally is identified with the Knights of Columbus as D. D. S. K. He belongs to the Boston City Club, in which he is active and popular, and is a communicant of St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, at West Roxbury, Massachusetts, where he makes his residence, at No. 223 Bellevue Street. He has his offices in Barristers' Hall,
Suite 403, Boston, and these offices are known to an ever-increasing clientele. Mr. Petrocelli makes a hobby of football, follows games closely, and rarely misses one of importance if it is not too far from Boston. He supports all worthy enterprises directed toward the advance- ment of the greater community, and is known well for his loyal public spirit.
Mr. Petrocelli enlisted, in 1918, in the United States Naval Reserve Forces, and was sta- tioned at Hingham for training. Later he was stationed at the Harvard Naval Radio School, United States Navy, and was released from active duty January 11, 1919, when he resumed the course of the career herebefore outlined.
Mr. Petrocelli married, April 20, 1927, at Bel- mont, Massachusetts, Agnes J. Gorman, daugh- ter of James A. and Anna M. (Smith) Gorman. They have a son, Joseph, who was born April 22, 1928.
ALAN KRAVITZ-The life of Alan Kravitz, attorney, of Boston, has been most unusual. Born at Odessa, Russia, December 25, 1901, he is a son of Hyman and Gussie (Tepper) Kravitz. His father, native of Russia, died there, and when Alan Kravitz was four years old his mother brought him to the United States. In the family are children: 1. Jack, who now re- sides at Dorchester, Massachusetts. 2. Celia, wife of Abraham Corman, and they make their home with Alan Kravitz and his mother, in Dorchester. 3. Alan, of whom we write. 4. Elizabeth, unmarried, who lives at the residence in Dorchester.
With his mother, Alan Kravitz came directly to Boston from Russia, and looks upon Boston as his native place. He secured his elementary academic training at Wendell Phillips Grammar School, completed the work there in 1916, had two years in English High School, two years in Northeastern Engineering School, and after-

ward entered Suffolk Law School, for he now had marked preference for the law as a life's work. In 1924 he took the degree of Bachelor of Laws from this institution, was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1925, and has engaged in practice of his profession since, in Boston, being one of the foremost practitioners of his generation here, with offices in the Carney Building and an extensive clientele. A Republi-
can, he has interested himself somewhat in poli- tics, especially in Ward No. 14, where he is a well-known figure. He makes hobbies of foot- ball, baseball and other out-of-door games; is a member of the Damon Lodge, No. 12, Knights of Pythias, of Boston, and attends a synagogue in Dorchester. The residence, in Dorchester, is at No. 19 Havelock Street. Mr. Kravitz is un- married.
