LOCALITIES OF INTEREST
IN AND ABOUT THE CITY.
ACUSHNET. This is a village usually known as the Head of the River, about three and a-half miles in a northerly direction from the City Hall. The westerly part is in New Bedford, and the easterly part in Acush- net. Pine Grove cemetery is near the village. The post office is in New Bedford.
MOUNT PLEASANT. That portion of our territory known by this name is in the northwest part of the city, com- mencing at Robeson street. Here are some beautiful private residences, and the view which includes the river, the harbor, the bay, and adjoining shores, villages and islands, is one of the finest in the country.
BELLEVILLE. This name was, many years ago, given to a spot on the bank of the Acushnet river, about one mile south of Acushnet village.
CANNONVILLE. A portion of the westerly part of the city, in the neighborhood of the meeting-house on the Smith's Mills road, is known by this name, thus called in honor of one of our deceased citizens, whose labors in behalf of the people there will long be remembered.
CITY COMMON. This beautiful spot is in the north part of the city, and is bounded by County, Purchase, Pope anl Pearl streets. A very handsome monument, erected by the city, at a cost of about $13,000, as a memorial to the soldiers and sailors who lost their lives during the war of the Rebellion, is located here.

LOCALITIES OF INTEREST.
CLARK'S POINT. This point forms the southerly part of the city. It has the waters of the Acushnet river on the east, and of Clark's Cove on the west. Its length is about two miles. At its southern extremity on the river side is a large tract of land belonging to the United States ; at the extremity of the point, the government has erected an extensive fortification, to which the light-house has been removed. Aronud this point, a distant of about four miles, is a road not surpassed by any public drive, in this country. Is is called West French avenue, com- mencing at Cove street (at the Orphans' Home), and follows the shore from thence along the western, south- ern and eastern boundaries of the point, until it terminates in the street where it has its beginning. It is eighty feet wide, smooth and level, and in its course commands a series of views of surpassing loveliness and beauty. The. cove, the bay, the river, the shores, the islands and ledges, the lighthouses, steamers and sailing eraft of every description, the city on the one side, its sister town of Fairhaven on the other, and the noble bridge between, constitute a series of views, which render a ride or a walk over this road most delightful and attractive. The City Farm and Almshouse is located on Clark's Point. The fort at the point is the only one iu the country with- out a vane.
CLIFFORD. A post office about three miles north of Acushnet.
FISH ISLAND. The bridge from the city to Fairhaven passes over this island. Several wharves, an extensive coal yard, an oil factory, a marine railway, and a boat manufactory are located there.
FOUR CORNERS. The space formed by the intersection of Water and Union streets. This has been a somewhat noted spot in our local history. Near this was erected the first village house, and it was long regarded as a busi- ness centre.
PALMER'S ISLAND, upon which the United States Gov- ernment has a lighthouse, is at the mouth of the inner harbor. The main channel lies east of it. It affords a good protection from the high southerly winds.
SHAWMUT. This is a small village located four miles N. W. from City Hall. Evergreen Trotting Park is located here. Until the recent establishment of its post office, it was known as Plainville.
POPE'S ISLAND. This island derives its name from a family long known and respected among us. The bridge between the city and Fairhaven passes over it. It lies nearly in the centre of the river.
56
LOCALITIES OF INTEREST.
ROCKDALE is about one mile north of Cannonville, on Rockdale avenue. The only quarry of any size near the city is located here.
WINTERVILLE. The name given to a small collection of houses at the west of Rural Cemetery, on Winterville road. At one time this was quite a flourishing settlement, but is stated to be about one half as large as it was in 1868, owing to lack of road communications. Added to New Bedford from Dartmouth in May 1888.

KEMPTON'S CORNER. The corner of Kempton and County street. The land in this vicinity formerly be- longed to the Kempton family.
