Fairhaven, bounded on three sides by the waters of Acushnet river, Buzzard's and Little Bays. is admirably situated to meet the wants of those desiring summer honses. as is shown by the increasing numbers who come each summer to avail themselves of the bays' cooling breezes.
This town, formerly a part of the town of . Dartmouth, is honored by being the home of John Cook. the first white settler in this part of the State. and the last surviv- ing Pilgrim that came over in the "Mayflower."
The town's early citizens prior to and during Revolu- tionary times, were intensely patriotic and played an important part in those days on land and sea, to the confusion and defeat of their British enemies. After peace was declared, the energies of the people were di- rected toward the whaling industry, which was carried on until the discovery of petroleum oil, since when the attention of its citizens has been given to manufacturing, farming and fishing.
A number of places of historic interest are found here , notably, Fort Phoenix, which was built during the Revo- Intionary war, and which proved to be a tower of defence to the people on both sides of the river. The great natural beauty of its situation, the thousands who gather there to enjoy the sea breezes. all combine to render this place the most attractive of any in this vicinity
The Old Indian Burial Ground on Little Bay, now owned and protected by the State of Massachusetts
The spot near the town farm where John Cook built and commanded his garrison during the war of the Revo- lution
The old cannon at corner of Central and Main streets, which was captured from the British in 1777, at Nassau, by Fairhaven privateers.
The burial place of John Cook, at the north end of the town. A fitting memorial will be placed here ere long, through the efforts of the Fairhaven Improvement Asso- ciation, which has the care of most of these objects of historic interest. The association has beautified the town by planting many shade trees. established & plant of 75 bathing houses, a drinking fountain for horses, condnets lecture courses, and looks after town improvement gener- ally, including the care of Fort Phoenix alluded to.

ITEMS OF INTEREST.
The town of Fairhaven is fortunate in the generosity of former citizens, one of whom, Warren Delany of New burgh, gave the town a beautifully appointed cemetery ; while another, Henry H. Rogers of New York, has erected a costly school house, a free public library and a Public Town Hall, all of the buildings being of archi- tectural skill. The population of the town is nearly3,500.
