Directory Borrowers
(From 1907 Montreal Directory. )
Many are the complaints of those who regularly patronize the Directory that they are bored so much by borrowers; not the stranger or private citizen who steps into the office, looks at the Directory, and goes out, but business men who continually need it for reference, yet are too close-fisted to buy one. These are the individuals who carry off your Directory " just for a few minutes," which generally means A FEW DAYS unless you send for it before; then you have scarcely housed it before some one else presents the request "Please lend me your Directory for a few minutes?" Perhaps you won't see it again for a week; yet this same borrower will tell our solicitor that he has no use for a Directory, he " knows everybody " and " everybody knows him."

To Find a Name
You must know how to spell it. It is not uncom- mon for members of the same family to spell their name differently, preserving the pronunciation. £
A few instances as follows: Brown, Browne; Cain, Kain, Kane; Cavanaugh, Cavanough, Kavanough ; Chase, Chace; Cohen, Cohn, Kohn; Kelley, Kelly ; Kenney, Kenny, Kinney; Miller, Mueller, Miehler; Paine, Payne; Read, Reed, Reid; Rider; Ryder; Hines, Hynes ; and especially the French names.
Directories are arranged and printed in exact alphabetical order. If the examiner knows the way the name is spelled and follows out the order of the alphabet, he will save time and vexation of spirit.
