In Middlesex county, 40 miles northwest of Boston and ten miles east of Fitchburg on Fitchburg division, B. & M. R. R. The Fitchburg & Leominster Street Railway, from Fitchburg to Ayer, runs through the village thus making electric communica- tion with all surrounding cities. The postoffices are Shirley, and Shirley Center, a village to the north of the railway lines. Shirley is the seat of the C. A. Edgarton Mfg. Co., makers of the President suspenders; and contains a variety of other smaller manufacturing plants. The town was incorporated Jan. 5, 1753. Population, in 1905, 1692.
