All the available space was occupied. A special train from South Framingham brought 50 members of the Universalist parish in that town, where he was pastor be- fore coming here, and also many mem- bers of Gen. J. G. Foster Post, G. A. CLAIMED BY DEATH
Rev. W. W. Hayward Passes Its Portals.
Deceased a Man Much Respected by all Acquaintances.
Rev. W. Hayward of Medfield, formerly of South Framingham, passed away at the parsonage of the First. Par- ish church in Medfield at 1 o'clock this morning, after a short illness of heart trouble. The funeral services will be held at his late residence at 6 p m. to- day, and the remains will be taken to his native town of Hancock, N. H. for inter- ment early. Thursday morning. Arrange- ments are being made to have Gen. J. G. Foster, post 163, G. A. R. of which the deecased was a member, take charge of the funeral and a delegation of the W. R. C. and S. of V. are expected to attend.
Rev. W. W. Hayward was born in Han cock, N. H., in 1833, being fifty-nine years of age át his death After leaving college, he entered the civil war as the Chaplain of the 13th Maine volunteers serving for a while under that matchless commander, Gen. P. H. Sheridan in the valley of the Shenandoah. After the war he entered the ministry as a preacher of the' doctrine of Universlism and for mony years labored earnestly for h's church.
Rev. Mr. Hayward was settled as pas- tomof the First Universalist church in South Framingham for four and one-half years, coming to take charge of tire par- ish, in connection with that of the Na- tick society, on December 11, 1883. He continued as pastor of the Natick cl:urch for three years, or until April 1886. From this time he continued as pastor of the South Framingham church until the spring of 1888 when he severed his con- nections with the society, going to the town of Medfield and assuming charge of the First Parish Universalist church there. He was pastor of the latter church at his death.
After coming to South Framingham, the reverend gentleman connected him- self with Gen. J. G. Foster post 163 G. A. R., and served for two years as its chaplain. He retained his membership. in the post after leaving Framingham' until his death, and it was his express wishes that he@be buried under the auspices of his post. He was a thorough Grand Army man, always having a plcas- ant word and kindly deed for the boys in blue, and a ways joining them in their public or private demonstrations.
South Framingham people have very distinct recollections of the active man- ver in which the deceased participated in In nuhlin life of the town and the me not
interest he manifested in its welfare and progress as wewas in the life and well- being of its cits ns. Always with the leaders in anything which pertained 1.0 Framinghan's good, he was a firm jadvo- cate of temperance and prohibition, be- ing one year the nominee of the latter party for state senator from this district. He received a very complimentary vote from his friends, many of them attached to other parties.
He was a ready and fluent speaker, always acquiting himself with manifest credit before the public. What is said of his life in South Framingham applies with equal force in the other places in which he has resided. He compiled a history of the town of Hancock, his native place, and the work is a most in- teresting one. The deccased suffered during the spring in a manner similar to his last illness. Up to the time of his illness he had preached an extra sermon in Millis each Sunday, besides looking after his Medfield flock.
Rev. Mr. Hayward was a member of Gen. J. G. Foster Post 163 G. A. R. of t South Framingham, Beaver Brook lodge I. O.20. F. of Keene, N. H., Waverley Royal Arch chapter A. F. & A. M. of Melrose and of the Medfield Historical society. He leaves a wife, and two brothers, one, Dr. Francis Hayward residing in Waltham and the other at the home place in New Hampshire. The sincere and heartfelt sympathy of a host of friends and acquaintances goes out to the family of the deceased.
