RECENT DEATHS.
Edwin F. Cushing.
Edwin l'. Cushing, past commander of Willard C. Kinsley post, and a former councilman, died Saturday morning of heart disease at his home, 9 Harvard place. Mr. Cushing had been in poor health for several months, but attended to his work at tho Charlestown navy yard up to a few weeks ago. Mr. Cushing leaves a widow, Mrs. Elizabeth E., and a daughter, Mrs. Webster G. Hayward, of 38 Harvard street.
The funeral was held Tuesday morning. at 10.30 o'clock, from his late home. Many beautiful floral tributes were received from old Grand Army comrades, from organi- zations and friends. The casket was draped with flags, ono large flag being prc- sented by George W. Brooks, of Roxbury, an old friend of the deceased, and a mem-

ber of E. W. Kinsley post, 113, G. A. R., Boston. Flags were also presented by Wil- Jard C. Kinsley post, and by the Sons and Daughters of Veterans. Rev. N. K Bishop, rector of Emmanuel church, read the Episcopal service, and music was pro- vided by boys from the Emmanuel church choir, under the leadership of Easton S. Bacon. choir master. The body was place 1 in the receiving tomb of the Lowell ceme- i tery, and will be buried in the family 1.t in that cemetery.

Edwin F. Cushing was born in Dover, N. H., May 29, 1848, but during his early lite lived in Lowell, from which city he enlisted in Company H, Twenty-sixth Massachusetts volunteers, September 3, 1861. He was barely thirteen years old when he enlisted, and was one of the youngest volunteers who went out with the armies of the Union. He was present at the battles at the forts below New Orleans; he was then transferred to City Point, Va., and was in Washington when the Confederate General Early was threat- ening the capitol in July, 1864. Cushing was afterward in the Shenendoah valley participating with Sheridan in his famous battles. After the battle of Cedar Creek, popularly known as the battle of Winches- ter, he was detailed for the winter as orderly for General Hancock. He and his comrades were not mustered out till Sep- tember 23, 1865, so that his term of service lasted four years and twenty days.
During all these four years young Cush- ing was never in the hospital, and wal never wounded.
After the war, Mr. Cushing was for twelve years superintendent of manufac- turing at the South Boston house of eor- rection; later for four years at the New Jersey state prison, at Trenton, N. J., and then for four years in charge of contract work at the Charlestown state prison. Of late years he had been employed at the Charlestown navy yard.
In 1897, Mr. Cushing was elected com- mander of the Kinsley post, and in 1893 was sent to the city hall as councilman from old ward 4. He was an old resident of Somerville, residing for several years on Central street, near Highland avenue, be- fore moving to Harvard place.
