ANNUAL REPORTS
TUBERCULOSIS
During 1949 there were eight deaths from tuberculosis, seven from pulmonary tuberculosis and one from other forms.
All patients ill with the disease coming to the attention of the board have either been supervised at their homes by the public health nurses, or have been placed in sanatoria when such treatment was needed.
DIPHTHERIA IMMUNIZATION
The department has clinics the last Wednesday of each month throughout the year at the Knights of Columbus Build- ing, Highland Avenue, Somerville, for immunization .. It is opened to all children from 6 months to 10 years of age. It consists of three inoculations. Pre-school children have the option of the combination inoculation consisting of diphtheria toxoid and pertussis vaccine. The attendance at this clinic this year was 1483.
Notices have been in local papers advising parents to have their children immunized; notices have also been sent to parents whose children have reached the age of six months, to attend the clinic, or have their family doctor, but the exact number of inoculations have not been submitted to us.
Clinics were also held for the immunization of all school children in the kindergarten and the first grade of each school in the city.
The immunizations were accomplished without any ab- scesses of reactions. There were 2162 children who came to the clinics to be immunized of which 528 were "boosters" and 704 had the complete series.
Respectfully submitted,
WILFRID C. MacDONALD, M.D., Medical Inspector.

During the month of December the Laboratory was ren- ovated and re-arranged, following the installation of a number of new pieces of equipment.
The gas-heated Autoclave now in use, has been in service over forty-eight years. I recommend that money be approp- riated for the purchase of a larger, modern, electric heated, chrome plated replacement.
We continue to note the yearly improvement in the reduc- tion in bacteria, the keeping quality and the maintenance of food solids of milk sold in Somerville and the other cities and towns which this laboratory serves.
Respectfully submitted,
WILLIAM H. WALLIS, Inspector of Milk and Vinegar.
This report, a summary of the work performed in the several sub-divisions of the Board of Health, is respectfully submitted by
