PUBLIC LIBRARY

To the Honorable Mayor and Board of Aldermen Of the City of Somerville

Dear Sirs:

For the Board of Trustees of the Public Library of the City of Somerville, I submit the Annual Report of the Board for the year 1951, and with and forming part of it, the Annual Report of the Librarian to the Board of Trustees.

The Public Library is not an isolated phenomenon or some- thing which has emerged from the brains of individuals in moments of philanthropic zeal. The tremendous growth of the Library as a public institution between 1950 and 1952 indi- cates the presence of common causes working toward a definite objective. History and contemporary conditions justify the place of the Library in the realm of education, sociology, eco- nomics and the various other branches of human knowledge.
